Sumerta said the fire started when Jana was about to start the Dolphino Queen series speedboat engine. However, the speedboat’s engine exploded, and a fire quickly erupted afterwards. The fire grabbed the captain’s body, so he had to rush to jump into the sea beside the pier.

According to Sumerta, the speedboat caught in fire when Jana prepared to pick up tourists to Nusa Lembongan. Sumarta emphasised that the speedboat was not carrying passengers other than Jana, the ship’s captain.

“At that time, the victim was preparing a snorkeling tour for tourists in Nusa Penida. But when he started the engine, it explodes immediately,” added Sumerta.

Sumerta said the fire on the speedboat also scorched the snorkelling equipment. The police estimate that the total material loss from the fire incident was around IDR 650 million.

Nusa Penida sub-district head Kadek Yoga Kusuma said firefighters had arrived at the location and had managed to extinguish the fire. However, he did not know the exact details and source of the fire. “We received a report at 11.40 a.m. WITA, and immediately launched firefighters to the location of the fire,” he said.
