A foreign couple reportedly having a photo shoot session at the Lempuyang Sacred Temple received backlash since they were caught on camera kissing at one of the most sacred temples in Bali.

Bali is home to hundreds of Balinese Hindu temples. Each of them are gorgeous and distinctive; some are more renowned than others. The Penataran Agung Lempuyang Temple in Bali, also known as the Gateway to Heaven Temple, provides stunning views of Mount Agung.

The Penataran Agung Lempuyang Temple has become a popular tourist location in Bali. Tourists worldwide travel to Karangasem Regency to see the renowned and very spiritually significant temple.

At the Penataran Agung Lempuyang Temple, tourists frequently have to wait in queue for up to an hour to have a chance to stand between the gates.

In the video, a foreign tourist couple poses for photos at the temple gates while wearing suitable attire to enter the sacred site.

Suddenly, the guy bends on one knee and asks his girlfriend to marry him. She initially reacts with surprise, horror, and evident joy. After a brief kiss, the pair turns to face other visitors and exits the gate after she says yes.

The scene has been hailed as charming and wonderful by many video viewers. Even the viral video account that initially published the video, which now deleted, labelled it with “so sweet” and the heart-eyes emoji; the comments even include good wishes of “congratulations.”

However, this was only the case for some. The video indeed records a romantic moment of emotion for the foreign couple. Still, this video also causes controversy and backlash, especially from Hindus in Bali who believe that Lempuyang Temple is a sacred place and is intended for them to worship.

The video is proving controversial, and officials from the temple have confirmed that they are investigating the matter. Since Penataran Agung Lempuyang Temple, and other temples in Bali, is a sacred space, intimate actions of any kind are prohibited.
