Ubud has long been a meeting point for artists, cultural practitioners and creative thinkers. Now, a new destination is adding to the area’s cultural landscape.
Satyanara, located in Kedewatan, Ubud, Bali, brings contemporary art, cultural heritage and cross-cultural exchange together in a setting designed to encourage creativity and collaboration.
Operating under Yayasan Satya Djaya Raya, Satyanara goes beyond the traditional gallery experience. Its vision is to create a space where artists, researchers, collectors and the wider community can meet, exchange ideas and explore the connections between art, culture and everyday life.
Set among rice fields on the hills overlooking the Ayung River, the destination combines exhibition spaces with artist studios, workshops, residency facilities and an amphitheatre. A café and retail area add to the visitor experience, while public programmes are designed to encourage engagement with art beyond the gallery walls.
Three Art Galleries, Three Different Perspectives

Satyanara opens with three exhibitions that explore Indonesian art, cultural landscapes and traditional Chinese calligraphy. Together, they offer visitors different perspectives on how artistic practices preserve heritage while responding to changing times.
1. Ubud Art Ground #2: Letters to Colour
The second edition of Ubud Art Ground, titled Letters to Colour, explores the significance of colour in Indonesian art, from traditional practices to modern and contemporary interpretations.
Curated by Hendro Wiyanto, the exhibition brings together 32 artists from Bali, Yogyakarta, Bandung, Jakarta and Solo. It draws inspiration from research into Balinese colour traditions, including the cultural and philosophical meanings associated with colour in Balinese cosmology.
By bringing together different artistic approaches, the exhibition invites visitors to look beyond colour as a visual element and consider its deeper relationship with cultural identity and artistic expression. Letters to Colour runs from 22 October 2026 to 24 January 2027.
2. Fluid Kinship
At the second gallery, Fluid Kinship examines the relationships between people, their environments and the cultural landscapes they inhabit.
Curated by Mella Jaarsma and Yipei Lee, the exhibition explores themes including ecology, food systems, geography and human movement. It also considers how traditions and local knowledge shape the way communities interact with their surroundings.
One of its points of interest is Subak, Bali’s traditional irrigation system, which reflects the relationship between agriculture, water management and community life.
Through these interconnected themes, Fluid Kinship encourages visitors to consider how culture develops through the relationship between people and the natural world. The exhibition runs from 22 October 2026 to 30 April 2027.
3. A Brush Between Worlds
The third exhibition, A Brush Between Worlds, turns its attention to Chinese calligraphy and the preservation of artistic traditions across generations.
Featuring works from the collection of the late Professor Chou Chen, the presentation includes Chinese calligraphy tools known as the Four Treasures of the Study, alongside paintings and seal carvings.
The exhibition highlights the continued relevance of traditional artistic practices and the knowledge passed down through generations. It also reflects Satyanara’s wider interest in cultural connections across Asia, showing how artistic heritage can be preserved while remaining part of contemporary cultural conversations.
More Than an Art Gallery in Ubud
Beyond its opening exhibitions, Satyanara aims to establish an active creative community in Bali. Its facilities support a range of activities, from workshops and discussions to film screenings and artistic performances. Artist studios and residency facilities also provide opportunities for research, experimentation and collaboration. These spaces are intended to support creative development while helping artists connect with wider professional and cultural networks.
For visitors, the programme offers different ways to engage with art, whether through exploring exhibitions, attending public activities or learning more about the ideas behind individual works.
The destination also aims to connect local artistic practices with international perspectives. By bringing together different cultural backgrounds and disciplines, Satyanara creates opportunities for conversations about identity, history, society and the environment.
