A crescent Moon appeared alongside the bright planet Venus across skies over western Indonesia on Monday evening, 14 September 2026, creating a visible astronomical event that was observed in areas including Bogor, Jakarta, Cirebon and Tanggamus Regency in Lampung.
The phenomenon, known as a Moon-Venus conjunction, was visible after sunset as the two celestial bodies appeared close together in the western sky. Venus, which is often referred to as the Morning Star or Evening Star, appeared as a bright, star-like point next to the thin crescent Moon.
The Moon was only a few days past its New Moon phase on 11 September, with approximately 10–16 per cent of its surface illuminated. Venus, meanwhile, was particularly bright, with an apparent magnitude of around -4.5 to -4.8.
The combination could be observed with the naked eye, provided the sky was clear and the western horizon was not obstructed by buildings or other structures.
Why Did the Moon and Venus Appear Close Together?
A conjunction occurs when two celestial objects appear close to each other in the sky when viewed from Earth. The objects themselves can remain extremely far apart in space.
The Moon orbits Earth, while Venus orbits the Sun. Their apparent proximity occurs because the Moon’s orbit and Venus’ position in the sky can bring them close together along the ecliptic, the apparent path followed by the Sun across the sky.
Both objects were visible in the west after sunset on Monday. Venus was acting as an evening star, remaining bright in the twilight before setting.
The view may also have been enhanced by earthshine. This occurs when sunlight reflected from Earth faintly illuminates the darker portion of the Moon, allowing the outline of the lunar disk to be seen even though only a small section was directly illuminated by the Sun.
The National Research and Innovation Agency (BRIN) also confirmed that the bright object beside the Moon was Venus.
“That was the crescent moon and the planet Venus (the Morning Star),” astronomer Thomas Djamaluddin said when contacted on Monday evening, 14 September 2026.
Thomas explained that the event was a normal celestial phenomenon, although the moment when the two objects appeared in conjunction could be striking when viewed directly with the naked eye.

Venus Occultation Visible in Parts of Indonesia
For observers in parts of Sumatra, western Java, Bali and a small area of West Kalimantan, the event involved more than a conjunction. The Moon also passed in front of Venus from Earth’s perspective, creating a lunar occultation.
According to Bosscha Observatory of the Bandung Institute of Technology (ITB), a Venus occultation occurs when the Moon passes directly between Earth and Venus. As a result, Venus is temporarily hidden behind the lunar disk before becoming visible again.
The event could therefore appear as though Venus had disappeared from the evening sky for a short period.
However, the occultation was not visible from all parts of Indonesia. Bosscha Observatory noted that only observers within a specific geographic path could see Venus disappear behind the Moon. People outside that path saw the conjunction, but Venus remained visible beside the crescent Moon.
The difference is caused by the observer’s position on Earth’s surface. Because the Moon is relatively close to Earth compared with Venus, changing the observer’s location can alter the Moon’s apparent position against more distant objects in the sky.
Bosscha Observatory stated that the occultation was expected to take place at approximately 19:30 to 20:43 WIB, although the exact timing varied depending on the observer’s location.
The event was the second of three Venus occultations in 2026, according to NASA. The first took place on 17 June and was visible from parts of the United States and Canada. The third is expected on 7 November and will be visible from parts of South America.
For most observers in Indonesia, the main event on Monday was the close pairing of the young crescent Moon and Venus in the western evening sky. The sight could be viewed without specialised equipment, making it accessible to casual skywatchers as well as astronomy enthusiasts.
