Garuda Indonesia Launches Free Domestic Flight Programme for Foreign Tourists

Garuda Indonesia has launched a free domestic flight programme offering 170,845 tickets to eligible foreign tourists travelling to Indonesia.

The programme, called “Discover More Indonesia”, is being carried out in collaboration with PT Aviasi Pariwisata Indonesia, also known as InJourney. It is designed to encourage international visitors to explore more destinations across Indonesia rather than limiting their trips to popular entry points such as Bali and Jakarta.

Garuda Indonesia Marketing Group Head Prina Eka Putri said the initiative was intended to change how foreign tourists travel around the country.

“Today, our challenge is no longer just about bringing more international travellers to Indonesia, but ensuring that a single arrival doesn’t stop at just one point; instead, it should evolve into a journey that extends to second, third, and subsequent destinations,” Prina said during a press conference in Jakarta on Tuesday (11 August 2026).

She said the programme was part of an effort to encourage tourists to continue their journeys to other parts of Indonesia after arriving in the country.

“We hope tourists will be motivated to easily continue their journeys to other parts of Indonesia, and the figure of 170,845 tickets also serves to mark the month of Indonesia’s independence,” she said.

Free domestic flights available beyond Jakarta and Bali

Under the programme, eligible foreign tourists can receive one free domestic flight to a destination other than Jakarta or Denpasar.

The initiative applies to international travel taking place between 1 August and 30 November 2026. Foreign tourists can purchase their Garuda Indonesia international tickets through the airline’s website and app, online travel agents (OTAs), conventional travel agencies, ticketing offices, its call centre or WhatsApp service.

Travellers must use the code “INDO” when booking the free domestic flight.

The offer is also available to eligible travellers who purchased their Garuda Indonesia round-trip international tickets before the programme was announced. However, they must meet the applicable requirements, including matching departure and arrival locations and complying with minimum-stay conditions.

The international flight to Indonesia must also be completed no later than 30 November 2026.

Prina said the programme was intended to make it easier for tourists to include additional Indonesian destinations in their itineraries.

“We will arrange the free domestic flights for them, provided they fly during the programme’s active period,” she explained.

The 170,845-ticket figure was also deliberately chosen to correspond with Indonesia’s Independence Day.

“And regarding the figure of 170,845, we chose this number to commemorate the month of the Republic of Indonesia’s independence; specifically, August 17, 1945, the date we gained our independence,” Prina said.

Programme also aims to increase flight demand

Beyond encouraging tourism, Garuda Indonesia said the programme is also expected to help improve the airline’s flight load factor.

Garuda Indonesia Southeast Asia Branch Manager Agny Gallus Pratama said the airline had identified a gap between projected load factors and expected demand for the second half of the year.

“An increase in load factor naturally benefits revenue performance. So, as the load factor rises, we expect revenue—particularly from international routes—to increase as well,” Gallus said.

He added that the programme could also strengthen Garuda Indonesia’s regional brand by improving connectivity between international routes and destinations across Indonesia.

“This allows us to provide access and connectivity that extends beyond just Jakarta and Bali to destinations across Indonesia,” he said.

Meanwhile, InJourney Senior Vice President and Corporate Secretary Yudhistira Setiawan said around 70 per cent of foreign tourist visits to Indonesia rely on air travel. Bali accounts for approximately 40 per cent of visits, while Jakarta contributes around 27 per cent.

“This enhances the competitiveness of Indonesian destinations; foreign tourists who might otherwise have flown with other airlines could now be encouraged by this programme to visit Indonesia,” Yudhistira said.
He added that the initiative could help attract more international visitors while encouraging them to include additional destinations in their Indonesia itineraries.

“We are very optimistic that this programme will trigger an increase in visitor numbers, helping us meet our targets for the coming year,” he said.
