Art enthusiasts in Jakarta have a new exhibition to add to their cultural calendar this month. Japanese contemporary artist NEUNOA presents INSIDE & OUTSIDE, a solo exhibition running from 5 June to 5 July 2026 at Jakarta Art Hub in Central Jakarta.
Presented by Vice & Virtue Gallery and Rika Contemporary, the exhibition spans two venues within Jakarta Art Hub, offering visitors an immersive exploration of identity, perception, and human values beyond outward appearances.
Based in Tokyo, NEUNOA’s artistic practice examines the essential values that exist beneath visible identities and appearances. Drawing inspiration from public figures in music, film, politics, and popular culture, the artist transforms familiar images through thick layers of paint, physical gestures, and bold abstraction.
The resulting works challenge viewers to question how identity, authority, value, and perception are shaped in an age saturated with visual information.
Rather than focusing on labels such as gender, race, age, or social background, NEUNOA encourages audiences to look beyond surface-level classifications and discover shared human qualities.
In keeping with this artistic philosophy, the artist intentionally keeps personal details such as age, gender, nationality, and appearance private, allowing the work itself to remain at the centre of attention.
Since beginning their artistic journey in 2021, NEUNOA has exhibited at numerous international art fairs and exhibitions, including Art Jakarta, ART021 Shanghai, ART TAIPEI, World Art Dubai, and Art Fair Philippines. The artist has also collaborated with international brands including HARE, Liquitex, and STAEDTLER.
A Unique Collaboration Between Art and Embroidery
One of the highlights of INSIDE & OUTSIDE is a series of embroidery works created in collaboration with &T, an embroidery art brand developed by the Japanese TAJIMA Group.
Founded in 1944, TAJIMA Group is globally recognised for its innovation in embroidery technology and its efforts to combine traditional craftsmanship with contemporary advancements, including AI-assisted embroidery techniques.
Through the concept of “People and Thread”, &T explores new possibilities for embroidery as an artistic medium. In this collaboration, threads move between the front and back of the fabric, simultaneously revealing and concealing structural elements beneath the image.
This process closely reflects NEUNOA’s ongoing exploration of the relationship between what is visible and what remains hidden.
