22 Years Since the Bali Bombing Tragedy: Hundreds Gather to Pray at the Monument

On October 12, 2002, Indonesia and the world still remember the Bali bombing tragedy. The humanitarian disaster that occurred at Ground Zero, Jalan Legian, Kuta, passed 22 years ago. Hundreds of people gathered again at the Bali Bombing Monument, which was the location of the victims of the humanitarian tragedy on October 12, 2002.

Hundreds of people who attended came from various backgrounds, such as families of victims, survivors, local communities, and foreign tourists.

Unlike previous years, the Badung Regency Government, through the Badung Tourism Office, commemorated the humanitarian tragedy this year. In this joint prayer, participants simultaneously lit candles, making the commemoration solemn.

In addition, the audience laid flowers in the hope that similar tragedies would never be repeated in the future. This humanitarian moment was also marked by the release of 22 doves as a message and invitation to always maintain peace, tolerance, and unity in the midst of diversity.

Twenty-two years ago, or precisely October 12, 2002, a terrorist tragedy that is said to be the worst in Indonesia occurred. The Bali Bombing I incident claimed the lives of 202 people and caused 209 others to suffer injuries. The majority of the victims were foreign tourists and some Indonesian citizens.

Acting Governor of Bali, Sang Made Mahendra Jaya called for tolerance among religious communities and the importance of harmony in social life on the 22nd anniversary of the Bali bombing.

Mahendra Jaya, in his remarks read out by the Head of Bali Province’s National Unity and Political Agency I Gusti Ngurah Wiryanata at Ground Zero Monument or Bali Bombing Monument, Kuta, Badung Regency, Bali, Saturday (12/10) evening said the cruel bomb exploded in that place destroying lives and scratching deep wounds on everyone’s hearts.

As reported by Antara, “Let us make the memory of this suffering a starting point to inspire our actions and build a more harmonious world. ”

Given that Kuta is the main tourist destination in Badung, the Denpasar Police Traffic Unit conducted traffic engineering and temporary lane closures along Legian Road.

The closure was carried out starting at 5:00 p.m. until the joint prayer event was completed. Based on the committee’s agenda from LPM Kuta, the event will end at 7.00 p.m.

However, the agenda has still been adjusted to the agenda during the joint prayer activities.

The Bali bombing memorial was renovated

Ground Zero, or the Bali bombing memorial, now looks more sparkling. After three months of renovation by the Badung Regency Government, Bali, the Monument has been decorated with many lights.

There are several improvements. For example, the replacement of light decorations along the edges of the wall and the relief of the Balinese wayang gunungan with the name boards of the victims.

For information, the peace prayer event Light Up from Bali to the World was held in the Ground Zero area. Representatives of friendly countries, such as the Consulates General of the United Kingdom, Australia, Germany, and Japan, attended the ceremony.
