On 24th February 2024, a motorbike theft suspect made a bold attempt to evade capture by leaping into the sea at Gilimanuk Harbour in Jembrana, Bali. The incident unfolded when the suspect and an accomplice were apprehended by the police while attempting to flee on a ferry. Both individuals were identified as motorbike thieves captured on CCTV cameras in the North Kuta area of Badung.

The sequence of events leading to the arrest began with the police receiving information regarding the location of a stolen motorbike destined for Java. Acting swiftly, the police tracked down the suspect, who was already aboard a ferry at Gilimanuk Harbour. Sensing that his actions had been discovered by the authorities, the suspect, identified as HS, opted to jump into the sea in a bid to evade arrest.

Meanwhile, another suspect identified as AHN attempted to evade capture by hiding in a truck but was ultimately discovered by the police. According to Kompol Dewa Putu, the Chief of Gilimanuk Police, both suspects have been apprehended in connection with the incident.

During the arrest, law enforcement officers confiscated various pieces of evidence from the suspects, including a stolen motorbike, vehicle registration documents (STNK), two cellphones, and a wallet containing the suspect’s driver’s license and identification card.

Currently, both suspects and the seized evidence are being held at the Gilimanuk Police Station for further investigation. The stolen blue Yamaha N-Max motorbike with license plate number DK 6462 FCI has also been confiscated.

Despite its reputation for scenic beauty, Bali also grapples with high crime rates. Motorbike theft cases, in particular, have been consistently high over the years. In 2022, a total of 853 criminal cases were recorded, marking a 70-case increase in theft incidents compared to the previous year.
