The government is accelerating the transition from e-KTP to IKD to streamline identity card funding. IKD is deemed more efficient in preventing forgery and unauthorized use of population data.

Digital ID cards will serve as a comprehensive national digital identity for all Indonesians, facilitating access to both government and private services. To enhance accessibility, a dedicated digital ID card application will be introduced for use on smartphones.

The utilization of IKD eliminates the necessity for photocopies in administrative processes at government offices. The Ministry of Home Affairs highlighted that IKD will function as a Single Sign On for diverse government services.

Additionally, IKD will serve as a digital wallet, enabling the storage of various population documents, including family cards, children’s identity cards, birth certificates, and other relevant documents.

Regulation number 72 of 2022 from the Ministry of Home Affairs addresses the Standards and Specifications for Hardware, Software, Electronic Identity Card Blanks, and the Implementation of Digital Population Identity. This comprehensive regulation caters to the needs of both citizens and the state in adopting the digital ID card system. By January 2024, over 7,316,449 individuals possessed the IKD.

The Ministry of Home Affairs plans to continuously enhance features to improve the user experience and streamline the activation process for IKD, eliminating the need for individuals to visit the Dukcapil Service office.
