A Dutch Tourist Tragically Killed in Motorbike Accident, Struck by Truck While Attempting to Overtake

A tragic motorbike incident took place at the intersection of By Pas Ngurah Rai-Griya Anyar-Pemogan on 19 December 2023, involving a 21-year-old Dutch tourist known as BRJ. The fatal accident occurred when the young man, riding an automatic motorbike, collided with a turning truck, resulting in his immediate demise at the scene.

Denpasar police spokesperson I Ketut Sukadi reported that the motorbike rider attempted to overtake the truck at a high speed. However, as the truck began its turn towards Griya Anyar, the motorbiker was unable to evade the collision.

According to a written statement by Sukadi, it was stated that the victim sustained a severe head injury and passed away immediately. The primary cause of the tragic motorbike accident was the victim’s inability to maintain a safe distance from the truck.

Numerous circulating photos and videos depict the victim’s motorbike in a heavily damaged state, while the road is marked with bloodstains. The victim’s body has been subsequently transferred to Prof Ngoerah Hospital (Sanglah) for further procedures.

Incidents of Foreign Tourists Involved in Motorbike Accident in Bali Throughout 2023

Every year, there’s a rising trend in motorbike accident involving foreign tourists. Simultaneously, local communities also face a significant number of traffic accidents. Jasa Raharja Bali’s data shows that between January and November 2023, there were 425 fatalities and 3,008 injuries due to traffic accidents.

Specifically for foreign tourists in Bali, there were 68 recorded motorbike accident in 2022. As of the beginning of 2023, six accidents involving foreign tourists occurred in the Gianyar, Badung, Buleleng, and Denpasar areas.

The Bali Regional Police consistently urge motorbike rental companies to enforce stricter requirements for driving permits among both foreign and domestic tourists. Non-compliance with driving regulations, including not wearing helmets or using phones while driving, contributes significantly to the high accident rates among tourists.
