Indonesian Government Plan to Broaden Visa Free Access to 20 Additional Countries

Share:

In 2024, the Ministry of Tourism and Creative Economy, Sandiaga Uno is proposing expanded visa-free access to 20 countries and is still under review by President Joko Widodo. The Minister aims to welcome 9.5 to 14.3 million foreign tourists, as discussed during the 2023 National Coordination Meeting for Tourism and the Creative Economy held in Bandung on 12 December 2023.

As of early December 2023, the Indonesian Ministry of Tourism reported 9.49 million foreign tourist visits, surpassing the initial 2023 target of 8.5 million visitors. Sandiaga highlighted the expansion of direct flight routes from various Indonesian international airports, particularly Ngurah Rai Airport in Bali, aiming to boost tourist visits.

The proposal for visa-free access to 20 countries is pending President Joko Widodo’s approval by the year’s end. Sandiaga further emphasized the government’s ambitious 2024 target of generating IDR 200 trillion in revenue from the tourism sector.

Erick Thohir, Ministry of State-Owned Enterprises, also highlighted 13 airports slated to be key hubs for foreign tourist arrivals. Presently, only five airports designated as “Super Priority Airports,” including Yogyakarta, Lombok, Komodo, and Sam Ratulangi International Airports, are in the top tier.

The remaining airports, such as those in Batam, Jakarta, Surabaya, Makassar, Banda Aceh, Jayapura, and Kertajati, are still undergoing refinement processes.
