The Jakarta Provincial Government is building a temporary commuter line or KRL station near the Jakarta International Stadium (JIS) in North Jakarta. The Jakarta Transportation Agency’s Director, Syafrin Liputo, indicated that the new station aims to improve public access to the stadium.

“A temporary commuter rail station is being set up at JIS. We expect that this would improve the accessibility to the JIS station’,” Liputo stated on Monday, the 3rd of July, 2023, at City Hall in Central Jakarta.

The Transportation Ministry, PT Jakarta Propertindo (Jakpro), a city-owned developer, and PT Kereta Api Indonesia (KAI), a state-run railway operator, participated in discussions on building KRL and MRT stations connected to the stadium in 2021.

Jakpro wants the distance between the train station and the stadium to be under a kilometre. The two stations closest to JIS are Tanjung Priok Station and Ancol Station, a few kilometreaway.

However, until recent negotiations which concerning the locations for the U-17 World Cup in 2023, less information was available about the project proposal.

Liputo claims that the KRL station project is still in its early phases of development; only the railway station has been built. He stated that around 30% of the station’s construction had been completed.

Liputo did not offer much information on the KRL station project’s partnership between the provincial government and PT Kereta Commuter Indonesia or KAI Commuter. The developer’s obligation fund or the Building Floor Coefficient (KLB) money will be utilised to obtain regional funding for the station; it has been verified.

However, the KRL station project will be finished after the U-17 World Cup, which is set to take place from the 10th of November to the 2nd of December, 2023. This is due to clashes with the Harbour Road (HBR) II toll road development project. According to Syafrin, construction on the station will be completed in 2024.

Liputo said, “After taking into account the completion of the Harbour Road II Toll Road construction, the KRL station project is postponed to April 2024 at the latest.”

As indicated before, the Minister of State-Owned Enterprises, Erick Thohir, the Minister of Public Works and Housing, Basuki Hadimuljono, and the Minister of Youth and Sports, Dito Ariotedjo, voiced concern that JIS could not exceed FIFA criteria for hosting the U-17 World Cup. These worries mainly concerned the stadium’s accessibility to the general public and parking availability.
