The Bali Regional Police Directorate of Special Criminal Investigation (Ditreskrimsus) discovered a criminal abortion procedure by a dentist, a previous felony (fugitive), in a case of abuse of authority in the health sector. Ranefli Dian Candra, Deputy Director of Special Criminal Investigation for the Bali Police AKBP, stated that the suspect, I Ketut Arik Wiantara, was a dentist who was not registered with the Indonesian Doctors Association (IDI) and had performed abortions since 2006.

“The individual in question is a dentist, and (carrying out an abortion) has nothing to do with his profession. In reality, he has never worked as a dentist. According to the rules, the individual in question has no right to perform abortions,” claimed AKBP Ranefli on Monday, the 15th of May.

Ranefli stated that the suspect was apprehended on the 8th of May 2023, at 21.30 WITA in Padang Luwuh Street, Dalung, North Kuta District, Badung Regency, Bali.

The dentist in question was detained along with three other persons who are still considered witnesses. The dentist, who was being searched by the police, had just performed an abortion on a woman accompanied by her boyfriend. The maid tasked with cleaning up the abortion site after the dentist performed the abortion supported the suspected dentist in carrying out this conduct.

Ranefli said that because dentists lack an obstetrician licence, they must be self-taught in performing abortions.

“The individual in question learned self-taught from the internet and books, and then understood the mechanism of the abortion method,” Ranefli explained.

The suspect dentist told the Bali Police Ditreskrimsus investigators that he did this because he felt bad for the patients who came to him. On average, he received requests from young, single patients who are still in high school, college, or other forms of productive age.

The dentist in question has violated several articles, which include Article 77 Juncto Article 73 Paragraph (1) of Law Number 29 of 2004 concerning Medical Practice, which carries a five-year jail sentence and an IDR 150 million fine, which was brought against the suspected dentist for his activities.

The second one is Article 78 in conjunction with Article 73 Paragraph 2 of Law Number 29 of 2004 Concerning Medical Practice, which carries a five-year penalty in prison and an IDR 150 Million fine, and the third is Article 194 in conjunction with Article 75 Paragraph 2 of RI Law No. 36 of 2009 Concerning Health, which carries a ten-year penalty in prison and anIDR 10 Billion fine.
