British Man Had an Altercation with Bali Police Officer Over Bar Bill

After being detained for failing to pay for his meal and drinks at a Legian pub, a British man was charged with assaulting a police officer in Bali. During his indictment hearing on Friday, 12th of May 2023, the Denpasar District Court learned that the British man was intoxicated and disorderly when he was brought to the Kuta Precinct on the 17th of February 2023.

In response to his yelling and cries for release, he was placed in a holding cell when he was first detained at the Denpasar police headquarter. Adhi Waluyo, an officer, went inside the cell to speak with him, but the British man assaulted him by attacking the officer’s head, hands, and feet. He threw the officer out and fractured Waluyo’s teeth.

“[Medical exam reports] showed that the 41-year-old male victim sustained wounds and a chipped tooth due to blunt force trauma,” stated Public Prosecutor Putu Daniel Pradipta Intaran during the trial.

Prosecutors demanded a sentence of up to two years and eight months in prison for assault under the Indonesian Criminal Code (KUHP).

So far, there has yet to be an update on the British man’s side of his defence stances. There is a big possibility that he may be detained in Indonesia first before getting deported later on.

This British man’s case is not the first case of a foreigner rampaging in Bali, where most are heavily intoxicated. Last month, there was a case of an Australian man who got murdered by a bar owner for attacking and assaulting the bar owner while he was heavily intoxicated with alcohol and turning violent, and assaulted the servers at that bar.

Bali police remind all travellers to drink alcohol responsibly in order not to harm themselves and others around them.
