Golden Triangle Drug Cartel Dominating Bali

According to a report issued by Indonesia’s National Narcotics Agency (BNN), drugs from multinational Golden Triangle drug cartels make up most of the illegal drug traffic in Bali, a popular vacation spot in Asia. The head of BNN, Commissioner General Petrus Reinhard Golose, stated that the Golden Triangle and Golden Crescent drug trafficking cartel predominated the drug trade in Bali.

Golose stated during a news conference on money laundering offences in Denpasar on Friday, the 5th of May 2023, “The drugs smuggled into the country are mostly methamphetamine. Opium is produced in Southeast Asia by the Golden Triangle cartel, the area includes Laos, Thailand, and Myanmar. The Crescent Triangle, which includes Afghanistan, Pakistan, and Iran, is recognized as the world’s most prominent opium-producing location.”

According to Golose, the addictive narcotics trafficked in Bali are dominated by the Golden Triangle cartel, as indicated by laboratory testing and seizures that have proven the similarities in their chemical pathways and narcotic signatures. Golose stated that a former drug convict participated in the Golden Triangle ring’s drug trafficking operations. The inmate’s initials were MW.

Golose said that the suspect was leading to the drug trafficking activities while imprisoned in Bali’s Kerobokan Penitentiary and that the BNN had recovered assets worth IDR 15 billion from MW that he had acquired through selling drugs.

The drug trafficking activities of MW involved many individuals. The actions of global drug rings, for example, in Myanmar, are carried out by mafias guarded by specialized military forces, making it difficult to crack the drug cases of Golden Triangle syndicates.

In addition to attacking the Myanmar government, the military wing of the Golden Triangle cartel is systematically in charge of the manufacture of addictive drugs and global markets.

“They have more than 40.000 soldiers in their army. They have a military academy as well. They are military-backed insurgents,” according to Golose.

Golose stated that the BNN has been working with its allies in other ASEAN nations to obstruct the Golden Triangle rings’ operations, mainly through the Mekong River and Southeast Asia’s sea.

Golose claimed that the Golden Triangle drug trafficking networks continue to threaten Indonesia’s maritime territories. Despite continuous aggressive police actions by the National Police and BNN, local and international drug traffickers continue to constitute a serious threat to Indonesia.
