Indonesia Anticipates Foreign Tourists Surge by 8.5 Million in 2023

The target number of foreign tourists anticipated for this year in 2023 has been raised from 7.4 million to 8.5 million, according to Tourism and Creative Economy Minister Sandiaga Uno on Tuesday, 11th of April due to visible “strong momentum.”

In his remarks at the beginning of the 12th Indonesian Tourism Industry Association (GIPI) commemoration, he said, “There seems to be a sudden strong momentum of foreign tourists visiting Indonesia at the moment; [the initial aim] has increased by 1.1 million, if I’m not mistaken, the figure was 8.5 million.”

Additionally, he asserted that recent statistics on tourist recovery in the Asia Pacific area shows a positive incline. Primarily concerning the proportion of individuals who wanted to travel abroad after the pandemic from the two main markets, notably China and Australia, which has recently seen India being added to the list of Indonesian foreign tourists.

Uno asserted that more aeroplane seats must be made accessible with Indonesian destinations in mind for foreign tourists. The Indonesian Transportation Ministry and the Tourism Ministry will work together to meet this anticipated demand.

Sandiaga Uno stated, “The goal is that Indonesia attracts up to ten million foreign tourists from China in the next 5-10 years, under the direction of the President.”

This year, Indonesia’s tourism is expected to recover fully. While the domestic tourist surge is expected to happen during the Eid holiday, the number of foreign tourists is expected will keep increasing, especially during this year’s high season. At this point, Bali is considered almost recover from how it was back in 2020, with majority of Australians visiting the island since the late 2022. The governement is optimist that Indonesia tourism would comeback stronger than ever.
