FIFA has declared that Indonesia will no longer be allowed to host the U-20 World Cup. They decided to change Indonesia’s role as the tournament’s host after the Indonesian football association (PSSI) claimed to call off the draw because the governor of Bali declined to welcome Israel’s team. The tournament is set to begin in May 2023.

Erick Thohir, the head of the Indonesian Football Association (PSSI), accepted FIFA’s decision to revoke Indonesia’s position as the host of the 2023 U-20 World Cup. The declaration was issued following a discussion between FIFA President Gianni Infantino and PSSI Chairman Erick Thohir in Doha, Qatar, on the 29th of March, 2023.

“I gave it my all. After delivering a letter from President Jokowi and speaking at length with FIFA President Gianni Infantino, we must accept FIFA’s decision to cancel the event that we are both looking forward to,” said Erick from Doha, as quoted in a statement distributed to the media on Wednesday, 29th of March 2023.

According to Erick, FIFA’s judgment as the highest authority for the international football association, with 211 members from all over the globe, could no longer be denied. “As a FIFA member, Indonesia must obey FIFA’s rules, authorities, and decisions,” he said

Erick Thohir had previously urged the International Football Federation, or FIFA, to consider the continuation of the U-20 World Cup in Indonesia following the broad rejection of the Israeli national team. “I had been assigned to get the best result possible,” Erick explained.

Erick’s hopes were dashed when FIFA revoked Indonesia’s position as the host country for the 2023 U-20 World Cup. This was revealed following a conference between FIFA President Gianni Infantino and PSSI Chairperson Erick Thohir on the 29th of March, 2023, in Doha, Qatar.

“FIFA has decided to revoke Indonesia’s status as the host of the 2023 U-20 World Cup due to the current circumstances,” FIFA claimed on its official website, with the following statement “A new host will be announced as soon as possible, with the dates of the tournament currently remaining unchanged.”
