The Cave Restaurant Reopens Following Investigation

July 27, 2022 – After an inquiry by the Indonesian Civil Service (Satpol PP), The Cave Restaurant in Bali has reopened. A video of the underground restaurant that went popular on social media prompted the opening of an investigation against the establishment.

Last week, the authorities temporarily suspended commercial operations while they surveyed the cave to see whether there were any antiquities worth preserving.

The Satpol PP and Bali Police inquiry was also designed to determine whether the recently opened facility was operating under the proper permissions and licenses. Authorities were previously unaware of the cave until the viral video made them aware of it. The cave was reportedly found in 2013 as The Edge Hotel, the restaurant’s parent company, was being built in Uluwatu. The Edge’s crew collaborated with renowned chef Ryan Clift to design a totally distinctive dining experience after an almost 10-year wait.

The cave might have had special cultural or historical significance to Bali. In that circumstance, the cave would require state protection for conservation and maintenance as public property. To learn more about the history of the geological treasure, the investigating team contacted the Bali Cultural Conservation Maintenance Centre.

According to Komang Anik Purniti, the head of the Bali Cultural Conservation Maintenance Center, her staff searches the cave for any indications of previous human activity. Her team examined the cave and discovered no signs of information that may indicate that it had ever been used for religious or cultural purposes. It’s no longer an ODCB [object of suspected cultural conservation].

I Gde Eka Sudarwitha, head of the Badung Regency Culture Service said that 1 cm of stalagmites or stalactites takes decades to form in the underground hollow. The fact that the stalagmites there have turned into pillars, as was discovered in the field, further supports this estimate. They can therefore speculate that the cave has been around for thousands of years.

When the momentary suspicion was established, The Cave Restaurant didn’t issue a statement. But the restaurant’s social media team announced the reopening on Instagram. Melida Weber, the general manager of the business, is quoted in the caption expressing her gratitude and how happy they are to be back.
