Contrary to popular beliefs, Bali is not a country but rather, a part of Indonesia. It’s one of Indonesia’s provinces that includes four islands which are; Nusa Penida, Nusa Lembongan, Nusa Ceningan, and Nusa Dua.

UNESCO World Heritage Site

Do you know that in 2012 subak is considered a UNESCO World Heritage? Subak is the intricate irrigation system founded by the Balinese in the 9th century. With the system, it can divert water from the mountain springs to the communities equally.

Tri Hita Karana

Balinese lives off the philosophy of Tri Hita Karana. This translates to “Three Causes to Prosperity” which refers to harmony with God (Parahyangan), harmony with their surroundings or nature (Palemahan), and harmony with humanity (Pawongan).

Wayan, Made, Nyoman and Ketut

While you are in Bali, you will encounter people with either of those names. That’s because Balinese usually have four children. The names mean ‘first born’, ‘second born’, ‘third born’, and ‘fourth born.’ If the family has five children or more, chances the fifth child is named Wayan too.

Balinese calendars

Bali has two calendar system, which is, the saka calendar and the pawukon calendar. The saka calendar is based on the moon cycles while the pawukon calendar originates from the Hindu religion. Unlike saka, pawukon only has 210 days with 10 different week cycles that happen simultaneously.

Silent New Year

Referring to the point above, the Balinese celebrate New Year’s in total silence. Hari Nyepi, or Nyepi day, follows the Saka calendar in which the entire island will cut off all lights and sounds, close all businesses even the airport, and meditates as silence and serenity dominate the entire island.

World’s most expensive coffee

The world’s most expensive coffee originates from Bali. A lot believed that Luwak beans are the poop of a type of Civat Cat called Luwak but it’s not entirely true. The animal only eats the finest of coffee cherries however, the beans are not digested and come out as it is.
