A passenger on a Batik Air flight from Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia, to Kochi, India, was handed over to local authorities after allegedly attempting to open an emergency exit and damaging a window panel during the flight.
The incident occurred on 5 August 2026 on a flight travelling from Kuala Lumpur International Airport (KUL) to Cochin International Airport (COK). The passenger, identified by the initials JA, was seated near the emergency exit and allegedly failed to comply with instructions from the cabin crew.
According to Batik Air, the passenger’s actions raised concerns over the safety of the flight. The airline said JA attempted to open the emergency window and damaged the window panel in the emergency exit area. The passenger also allegedly behaved in a manner that disturbed and threatened cabin crew members and other passengers.
Cabin Crew Responded During Flight
Batik Air’s Corporate Communications Strategic, Danang Mandala Prihantoro, said the cabin crew immediately responded to the situation in accordance with established safety procedures.
The crew managed to bring the situation under control and continued to monitor and provide special handling to the passenger until the aircraft landed safely in Kochi.
“The cabin crew successfully brought the situation under control and provided special handling for the passenger until the aircraft landed safely in Kochi,” said Danang Mandala Prihantoro in a press release received by Liputan6.com on Friday, 7 August 2026.
Danang described the incident as involving an “unruly passenger”, a term used in aviation for passengers who fail to follow cabin crew instructions or engage in behaviour that may disrupt order, security or safety during a flight.
He said the cabin crew’s response was focused on maintaining safety for everyone on board while ensuring the aircraft could continue its journey safely.
Passenger Handed Over to Indian Authorities
After the aircraft landed at Cochin International Airport, JA was immediately handed over to airport security personnel and local authorities.
The passenger was then subject to further handling and investigation by the relevant authorities in India. Batik Air said it would support any measures taken by the authorities within their jurisdiction.
“Batik Air has zero tolerance for any actions that could endanger flight safety. We will also fully support measures taken by authorities within their jurisdiction,” said Danang in a press release received by detikTravel on Friday, 7 August 2026.
The airline reiterated that the safety, security and comfort of passengers and crew members remain its priorities during every flight operation.
Batik Air also reminded passengers that following cabin crew instructions and complying with aviation safety regulations are essential parts of ensuring safe and orderly flights.
“Adherence to safety procedures is a shared responsibility to ensure that every flight proceeds safely, orderly, and comfortably for all passengers,” the airline said.
The incident did not prevent the aircraft from completing its journey to Kochi. The cabin crew’s intervention allowed the flight to land safely before the passenger was transferred to the relevant security personnel and authorities for further investigation.
