Viral Garuda Biru Emergency Warning On Indonesia Social Media, Here’s What it Means

Share:

Indonesian netizens are busy uploading an image of the Garuda Bird symbol with a dark blue background or Garuda Biru with the words’ Emergency Warning’. This upload became a trending topic on the X and Instagram platforms with the title Emergency Warning.

The mass movement is an invitation to the public to oversee the decision of the Constitutional Court (MK) and the 2024 Regional Head Elections.

This response emerged after the House of Representatives (DPR) Indonesia agreed to revise the Regional Head Election Law that annulled the Constitutional Court’s decision Number 60/PUU-XXII/2024, which stipulated new requirements for the submission of regional head candidates.

The Garuda Biru image is believed to have been first shared by several collaborative accounts, including @najwashihab, @narasinewsroom, @matanajwa, and @narasi.tv on Instagram.

The narasi.tv page explains that the poster with the words “Emergency Warning” is a fragment of an old video uploaded by the EAS Indonesia Concept YouTube account on October 22, 2022.

Besides the image of Garuda Biru with the words Emergency Warning, netizens are also flooded social media using the hashtag #KawalPutusanMK.

The purpose of these two hashtags is an invitation to raise awareness and encourage public participation while monitoring and overseeing the 2024 Pilkada process.

It is known that one day after the Constitutional Court’s decision, the Pilkada Bill Working Committee Meeting ignored it regarding the nomination requirements for the 2024 Pilkada.

This emerged in the discussion of the inventory list of new problems proposed by the DPR RI initiative in response to the Constitutional Court’s decision.

The DPR Legislation Body for the revision of the Pilkada Law is considered to have been designed in defiance of two previous Constitutional Court decisions.

First, the threshold for regional head candidacy should be restored to 20 per cent of DPRD seats or 25 per cent of the valid votes in the previous legislative elections, a regulation that the Constitutional Court has clearly ruled is contrary to the 1945 Constitution.

Second, the minimum age limit for regional head candidates should be restored starting from the inauguration. In fact, the Constitutional Court yesterday emphasized that the counting point must be taken at the determination of candidate pairs by the KPU.
