Harmony in Practice: Bali Prepares for Nyepi and Takbiran on the Same Night

Share:

Nyepi Day, marking the Caka New Year 1948, will fall on 19 March 2026, coinciding with the Takbiran night welcoming Eid al-Fitr 1447 H.

The overlap has prompted authorities in Bali to issue a joint appeal to ensure both religious observances proceed in an orderly manner.

The appeal was issued by the Bali Provincial Government, the Bali Provincial Interfaith Harmony Forum (FKUB), the Bali Provincial Office of the Ministry of Religious Affairs, the Indonesian National Armed Forces (TNI), and the Indonesian National Police (Polri).

Nyepi is observed by Hindus in Bali as a day of silence, during which residents refrain from travel, work, entertainment and the use of lights. On the same date, Muslims will mark the final day of Ramadan, with Takbiran traditionally held on the evening before Eid al-Fitr.

In Bali, Takbiran is usually conducted around mosques, similar to other regions in Indonesia. However, due to the coincidence with Nyepi, authorities have set specific limitations.

Joint Appeal Regulates Religious Observance

The Chairman of the Indonesian Ulama Council (MUI) for Bali Province, H. Mahrusun, stated that Takbiran will be permitted only inside mosques and without loudspeakers. Muslims may walk to the nearest mosque, but are not allowed to use vehicles.

“Takbiran is performed without loudspeakers, and is limited to 6:00 PM WITA and 9:00 PM WITA,” Mahrusun said on the sidelines of the MUI Inauguration and First Regional Conference on Saturday (28 February 2026).

He added that firecrackers and other sources of noise that could disturb the Nyepi observance are prohibited. Mosques may use sufficient lighting inside the building, but must avoid excessive lighting outside.

Security during Takbiran will be handled by mosque administrators, local community security officers (Linmas), and village or sub-district officials.

Authorities have urged all parties to cooperate in maintaining order. Mahrusun called on Muslims in Bali to comply with the appeal.

“This (Nyepi and Eid al-Fitr) has happened before, and it went smoothly,” he said.
