Silver humans are a unique phenomenon in Indonesia. They are the people who cover their entire bodies in silver paint to busk, beg or perform as street entertainers. This line of work emerged in response to the economic crisis and has become widespread in major cities such as Jakarta, Yogyakarta and Bali. Some time ago, it went viral on social media when a Silver Man in Bali claimed to earn 18 million rupiah a month! This is far higher than the average salary in Indonesia.

Rain Handler – Pawang Hujan

First on our list is Pawang Hujan or Rain Handler. As the name states, this kind of job revolves around a person ‘controlling’ the weather or making the rainy day turn to sunny. Only people with extraordinary abilities are able to do this, and they have certain rituals to do so. Pawang Hujan is usually hired for outdoor events like live concerts, wedding parties, cultural events, or others.

Tukang Parkir (Parking Attendants)

You’ll see them around mini markets, traditional markets, events, or festivals, they are the ones who control and maintain order in the limited parking lot. As you all know, Indonesia tends to be quite messy and unruly when it comes to parking on the streets, they’re the one who makes sure that everyone is able to park their car safely and also make sure that the cars don’t disturb the flow of the street that might cause congestion or traffic.

Tire Repairmen – Tukang Tambal Ban

Some things are often unpredictable, just like the tire of your motorcycle or car’s tire exploding in the middle of the road. Well luckily, tire repairmen are often available on the pavement near you. To find them, just spot their iconic ‘Tambal Ban” sign written on a car’s tire and you’ll be able to repair your tire as soon as possible at a very affordable price and continue with your journey.

Ketok Magic

When there are tire repairmen, you will find these Ketok Magic shops nearby. They offer the same concept as tire repairmen, to be there for you during emergencies happen but for your dented car. They can do a ‘magic knock’ that could return the shape of your dented car back to normal. The secret to their magic is just some tools like a hammer and wire using the technique of ‘ketuk teter.’

Pak Ogah

Turning to the other side of the street can be scary especially when you’re nowhere close to traffic lights. With many cars and motorcycles passing through the lane, you’ll find yourself hesitating on when’s the right time to cross. Fortunately for you, Pak Ogah is usually around to help vehicles or people crossing the road much easier as they can signal the upcoming vehicles to momentarily relent for you to cross.

Umbrella Service Provider – Ojek Payung

Sometimes, rainy days can be quite unpredictable during your stay in Indonesia. You might find yourself unlucky without an umbrella trying to get to your car or the nearest bus stop or station while it’s pouring hard outside. Though have no worries, for there are some Ojek Payung or umbrella service providers standing by to provide you with large umbrellas to get to your destination. If you get your hands full, you can ask them to help hold the umbrella for you to the nearest destination. Oh, don’t forget to pay them for their service as much as you want!

While you might find these types of jobs strange, you’ll be surprised how useful they are during your stay in Indonesia! Besides, these jobs tend to be in high demand because of how much people rely on their services so don’t underestimate them! Do you think any of these jobs will do well in your country? Which of these jobs be convenient if they were in your country?
