TransJakarta Fare Set to Change After 20 Years at Rp3,500

Share:

TransJakarta fares will be adjusted from 1 January 2027 after remaining at Rp3,500 for more than two decades, the Jakarta administration has confirmed.

The new fare has not yet been announced. While Rp5,000 has been widely discussed as a possible new rate, the figure is currently only a proposal from the Jakarta City Transportation Council (DTKJ), rather than a final decision by the Jakarta provincial government.

The current Rp3,500 fare has been in place since 2005. Governor Pramono Anung said the adjustment would be accompanied by changes to the transport subsidy system, with greater support directed towards groups considered to need it.

“Compared with all the surrounding areas of Jakarta, the fare is the cheapest. It has also not been adjusted for 20 years,” Pramono said, as quoted by Katadata.

The adjustment will apply to TransJakarta and TransJabodetabek services. This includes services within the same transport network, such as Mikrotrans and JakLingko. The exact rates will be announced before the new policy takes effect.

Rp5,000 Proposal and Expanded Free Transport Scheme

The Rp5,000 figure emerged from a DTKJ proposal to simplify fares for integrated public transport services in Jakarta. Under the proposal, journeys within Jakarta would cost Rp5,000, while TransJabodetabek services would be priced at Rp10,000. However, these figures have not been adopted as the final fares.

The possibility of a Rp5,000 fare has already prompted reactions from regular passengers. Zahra, a TransJakarta user who has relied on the service since university, said she would be comfortable with the proposed increase if it came with improvements to the service.

“If it goes up to Rp5,000, I think it is still manageable. The increase is not particularly drastic, so going from Rp3,500 to Rp5,000 is still reasonable,” Zahra told Inilah.com.

She also said better facilities should accompany any fare adjustment, particularly improvements to bus stops and an increase in the number of buses to reduce waiting times during busy periods.

“I hope that if the fare increases to Rp5,000, more of the bus stops will be improved,” she said. “The buses should also be increased, so passengers do not have to wait as long.”

At the same time, the Jakarta government plans to expand its free public transport scheme. The number of eligible groups will increase from 15 to 21 from 1 January 2027.

Additional groups include companions of people with disabilities, Jakarta residents seeking employment, referred patients, students from lower-income households outside the existing KJP and KJMU schemes, supported MSMEs and disaster victims.

Pramono said the fare adjustment would not mean that public transport subsidies were being removed altogether. Instead, the government intends to reduce subsidies for people considered able to pay while increasing protection for groups that require greater assistance.

“For those who can afford it, we will reduce the subsidy,” Pramono said.

The planned adjustment currently covers TransJakarta and TransJabodetabek. The Jakarta administration has stated that MRT Jakarta and LRT Jakarta are not included in this particular fare adjustment announcement.

Passengers will therefore need to wait for the official announcement to find out how much they will pay from January. For now, Rp5,000 should be treated as a proposed figure rather than the confirmed new TransJakarta fare.
