After getting postponed twice during independence day last year, and last December of 2022, LRT Jabodebek (Jakarta, Bogor, Depok, Bekasi) is finally ready to launch in July 2023. This time State-owned Enterprises (BUMN) Deputy Minister, Kartika Wirjoatmodjo ensured the exciting launch would be on time.

LRT Jabodebek, which connects Jakarta with its satellite cities; Bogor, Depok, and Bekasi, would be formally inaugurated on the 18th of August 2023, the day after Indonesia’s 78th Independence Day, according to State-owned Enterprises (BUMN) Deputy Minister Kartika Wirjoatmodjo. However, the light rail transit system will function effectively a month before that.

“It will be free to ride when we start running in July. Before we formally launch it, this is just a test run,” according to a statement from Kartika.

The operator of the LRT Jabodebek, PT Kereta Api Indonesia (PT KAI), has stated that a round-trip trip on the line will likely cost IDR 24,000 (US$1.64), depending on the distance travelled. The average cost of a single journey on the LRT Jabodebek is IDR 15,000 ($1.02).

At launch, LRT Jabodebek will serve 18 stations, namely Dukuh Atas, Setiabudi, Rasuna Said, Kuningan, Pancoran, Cikoko, Ciliwung, Cawang, TMII, Kampung Rambutan, Ciracas, Harjamukti, Halim, Jatibening Baru, Cikunir I, Cikunir II, Bekasi Barat, and Jatimulya.

It is important to distinguish LRT Jabodebek from LRT Jakarta, which primarily serves East Jakarta and is not connected to Jakarta’s larger train network. Since the routes will differ, the Minister advised the public to differentiate the two and avoid confusion when choosing the right LRT.

By launching this new LRT route and giving a free ride for a month, the government hopes that this will be a public transportation of choice for Jakartans and minimising the use of private vehicles to lessen the traffic jams in Indonesia’s capital city, Jakarta.
