An explosion occurred at SMA Negeri 72 Jakarta in Kelapa Gading, North Jakarta, on Friday afternoon (7 November 2025).

Police and emergency teams attended the scene shortly after receiving reports of the incident.

Initial information stated that two students had been taken to hospital, but updated data later confirmed a larger number of victims.

Head of Public Relations for the Jakarta Metropolitan Police, Senior Commissioner Budi Hermanto, confirmed an explosion within the school grounds. “Preliminary information indicates two victims were taken to the hospital,” he said. He added that officers were still collecting information and coordinating with units at the scene.

Jakarta Metropolitan Police Chief Inspector General Asep Edi Suheri and senior officers travelled to the location to monitor the situation. Hermanto said the police had not yet determined the cause of the blast. “The Bomb Squad Team is still searching the scene,” he stated, as reported by Kompas.

The Head of the Indonesian Navy Information Service, First Admiral Tunggul, explained that SMAN 72 is located within the Navy’s Maritime Regional Command (Kodamar) Complex in Kelapa Gading. The explosion occurred at a mosque near the school, where several students were present during Friday prayers.

A local resident said they heard an explosion while listening to the sermon, but further details from witnesses have not been released. The blast took place at SMA 72 on Jalan Prihatin No. 87.

Police initially reported two victims, but later information showed that dozens of people had been affected. At the time of the incident, officers had not yet confirmed the number of casualties.

Police Confirm 54 Victims and Seize Firearms

As reported by Detiknews, Inspector General Asep Edi Suheri later visited Cempaka Putih Islamic Hospital, one of the hospitals treating victims. Speaking to reporters, he confirmed the updated number of casualties.

“The initial data we received earlier indicates around 54 people,” he said on Friday (7 November 2025). He stated that the injuries ranged from minor to moderate, and some victims had already returned home. He did not provide further details about the source of the explosion.

Police have established posts for victims’ families and those seeking information. These posts are located at Cempaka Putih Islamic Hospital, Yarsi Hospital, and other designated centres.

During the investigation, officers seized two assembled firearms at the scene: a long-barrel weapon and a pistol. Asep confirmed that a suspect had been taken into custody for questioning.

The individual was detained inside the SMAN 72 Jakarta Mosque. Police said the suspect is not connected to the school community. “The perpetrator was immediately taken to the North Jakarta Police Station,” officers said on Friday.

Police have not yet confirmed whether the suspect acted alone. The investigation is ongoing, and officers are reviewing evidence, including the weapons found at the location.

The Gegana Bomb Squad from Polda Metro Jaya continued to examine the area around the mosque and the wider school complex. Officers secured the perimeter, restricted public access, and carried out detailed searches to ensure no additional hazards were present.
