Jakarta Blackout: Power Supply Disruption Hits Jakarta, MRT Stations Briefly Affected

Share:

A power outage struck several parts of Jakarta on Thursday evening, 9 April 2026, affecting areas in Central Jakarta, North Jakarta, and West Jakarta. The disruption occurred suddenly and impacted electricity supply across multiple districts.

PT Perusahaan Listrik Negara (PLN) confirmed that the outage originated from disruptions at several substations. Haris Andika, Senior Manager of Communications and General Affairs at PLN’s Main Distribution Unit (UID) for Greater Jakarta, said the issue was linked to the power supply system.

“There was a power supply disruption in several areas of Jakarta, originating from several substations tonight,” Haris said in a written statement on Thursday, 9 April 2026.

As of 8:00 PM WIB, some areas remained affected, including Angke in North Jakarta and its surrounding neighbourhoods. Haris added that PLN was working to restore the network in stages.

“Currently, the areas still affected by the outage are Angke and its surrounding areas. PLN is making gradual efforts to restore normalcy,” he said.

PLN later reported that electricity had begun to return as restoration efforts progressed.

MRT Services Temporarily Disrupted

The power outage also affected public transport services, including the Jakarta MRT. PT MRT Jakarta (Perseroda) reported operational disruptions at several stations starting at 5:57 PM WIB due to the power supply issue.

The disruption affected station facilities such as lighting, elevators, escalators, and other supporting infrastructure. All elevated stations experienced a temporary blackout during the incident.

“All elevated stations experienced a blackout, but power has now returned to normal,” said Rendy Primartantyo, Head of the Corporate Secretary Division of PT MRT Jakarta (Perseroda), in a statement on Thursday.

Rendy said the MRT operator took immediate steps to restore services and continued to coordinate with relevant parties.

“Currently, MRT field officers are continuing to monitor conditions and ensure services continue to operate smoothly. We will provide further information periodically,” he said.

He also apologised for the disruption and emphasised passenger safety.

“We apologise for the inconvenience, and the safety of MRT Jakarta customers remains our priority,” Rendy added.

Operations have since returned to normal following the restoration of power supply.

Government Response and Ongoing Monitoring

Jakarta Governor Pramono Anung Wibowo responded to the incident, stating that the disruption fell under PLN’s authority but had wider implications for the city.

“So, this blackout is entirely under the authority of PLN, but it has had an impact on us, including the MRT and LRT. Of course, we hope this doesn’t happen again,” Pramono said in Central Jakarta on Friday, as quoted by Antara.

He noted the importance of electricity for daily activities and public services in the capital.

According to available information, the outage was linked to system disruptions at several substations, which temporarily interrupted the electricity supply in affected areas.

PLN stated that it would continue to provide updates as restoration efforts are completed. Authorities and operators remain on alert to ensure stable service across Jakarta’s transport network and essential infrastructure.
