Meaning of Eid al-Fitr in the Islamic Calendar

Eid al-Fitr is an Islamic holiday that marks the end of ramadan, the month of fasting observed by Muslims worldwide. During ramadan, Muslims abstain from food and drink during daylight hours and increase acts of worship and charity.

According to Radio Republik Indonesia (RRI), the term Eid al-Fitr comes from Arabic. The word “idul” means celebration or holiday, while “fitri” comes from “fitrah”, meaning pure or clean.

Eid al-Fitr symbolises a return to purity after completing the month of fasting and spiritual discipline.

Paying Zakat al-Fitr

Zakat al-fitr is a mandatory charitable contribution paid before Eid prayer. It is intended to help those in need and ensure everyone can participate in the celebration.

Eid Holiday as a National and Religious Celebration

Eid al-Fitr holds profound religious significance rooted in Islamic teachings passed down since the time of the Prophet Muhammad. It is a moment for gratitude to God, acts of charity, and strengthening bonds within families and communities. Muslims begin the day by attending special prayers at a mosque, where large congregations gather in unity, often dressed in their finest attire.

The greeting “eid Mubarak,” meaning “blessed Eid,” is exchanged as an expression of goodwill, peace, and shared joy. The spirit of giving is also central, with zakat al-fitr, a charitable contribution, ensuring that those in need can also participate in the celebration.

In Indonesia, Eid is not only one of the most important religiour holidays but also a national holiday period that reflects the country’s cultural and spiritual identity. The government designates official public holidays to allow people to travel, reunite with loved ones, and observe religious traditions.
