19th August 2022 – A Peruvian student who was detained for drugs in Polda Bali died after consuming anti-depressant pills from her country. The detainee with the initials VVRDP (32) experienced vomiting and stomach pain. She is then declared dead after being treated at Prof. Dr. IGNG Ngoerah Hospital, Denpasar, Bali.

Satake Bayu, the Head of Public Relations (Kabid Humas) Bali Police Commissioner, said that the Peruvian student suffered from depression and schizophrenia with a history of using Sertraline, Bupropion, and Quetiapine medicines.

Bayu has yet to confirm whether the victim has consumed those medicines due to depression during detainment in the Polda Bali cell.

However, those medicines are medical drugs that have been prescribed by a doctor and the victim has been consuming it regularly. So, Bayu has reassured that there were no standard operative procedures (SOP) violated for bringing medicines during custody.

“It’s allowed if there’s a prescription from the doctor. It’s no problem because there’s already an explanation from the doctor,” he said on Thursday (18/8).

Bayu explained that the Peruvian student initially experienced stomach pain and vomiting after consuming anti-depressants on Monday (8/8). Afterward, she was sent to the Bhayangkara Hospital and referred to Prof Ngoerah Hospital Denpasar on Tuesday (9/8) at 05:00 AM WITA.

However, three days after undergoing treatment in the hospital, the student, unfortunately, passed away on Thursday (11/8).

Bayu said that the Customs and Excise officers arrested VVRDP at Bali’s Ngurah Rai International Airport on Saturday (6/8). She is arrested for carrying 231,65 grams of marijuana. After the arrest, she is handed over to Polda Bali for further legal proceedings.

Currently, her body is still being deposited in the forensic installation of Prof Dr. IGNG Ngoerah Hospital. Additionally, there has been no request for an autopsy on the body from either the family or the police. The police will handle the matter regarding the results of the diagnosis of the Peruvian student’s illness.
