CCTV footage has captured the moment an explosion at a restaurant in Pakuwon City, Surabaya, caused the wall of a neighbouring shoe shop to collapse, while the restaurant involved has apologised to residents and businesses affected by the incident.
The explosion occurred at the San Antonio shopping complex in Mulyorejo, Surabaya, on Tuesday morning (6 October). It originated from the Nasi Tempong Sri Dewi restaurant, where police believe a gas leak may have caused the blast.
Footage from Senikersku, a shoe shop next to the restaurant, shows its interior from several CCTV angles. The wall suddenly gave way, sending sections of the structure and a shoe display crashing into the shop. Part of the debris landed on the cashier’s desk.
The footage was shared by Senikersku’s official Instagram account, @senikersku_id. No employees or other people were visible inside the shop when the wall collapsed.
The business said the San Antonio branch was its first store.
“Honestly, we were shocked and saddened to see this CCTV footage. Our first store, Senikersku in San Antonio Surabaya, was also affected by the explosion from the neighbouring shop. This is something we certainly never expected, nor did anyone else in the area,” the company stated in their Instagram account.
The CCTV footage showed the scale of the impact on the neighbouring premises, with the blast also breaking windows at several shops in the surrounding area.
Restaurant Issues Apology to Those Affected
Following the incident, the management of Tempong Sri Dewi issued an apology to residents, businesses and others affected by the explosion.
In a statement published on social media on Tuesday evening, the restaurant’s management said:
“The entire management and family of Tempong Sri Dewi would like to extend our deepest apologies for all the impact and difficulties arising from today’s incident at the Tempong Sri Dewi San Antonio – Pakuwon City outlet.”
The management also expressed concern for people living and working around the site.
“We understand that this incident has caused concern, losses and inconvenience to many parties, particularly our neighbours and the community around the location.”
The restaurant said it was contacting parties affected by the incident and working towards addressing the consequences of the blast.
The explosion injured five people, consisting of four men and one woman. They were taken to hospitals for treatment, with the victims reported to have suffered burns. Police and emergency personnel also secured the area while investigations were carried out.
Police Continue Investigation into Suspected Gas Leak
Police said the explosion was suspected to have been caused by a gas leak at the restaurant. Three LPG cylinders, each with a capacity of 50 kilograms, were found at the site. Investigators said the cylinders themselves had not exploded and suspected a leak from the connected piping.
The Head of the Identification Section at the East Java Regional Police’s Criminal Investigation Directorate, Senior Superintendent Soekris Trihartono, explained that they had seized a number of items of evidence from the rear area of the Nasi Tempong Sri Dewi shop house, which was being used as a kitchen on the ground floor.
“The preliminary evidence found includes a 50-kilogram LPG cylinder. There are also several gas hobs, one stove and a few other items. There are also hoses – the installation hoses. Yes, they are part of the LPG system and have been seized as evidence,” said Soekris whilst at the scene on Tuesday (6 October 2026), as reported by Kompas.com.
Police have continued examining the site to establish the precise cause of the gas leak. Investigators also secured equipment from the restaurant, including an LPG cylinder, gas stoves, a fan and associated gas installation components for further analysis.
The blast damaged 41 buildings around the site, including 15 houses behind the restaurant. Five buildings close to the source sustained more severe damage, while other properties experienced lighter damage, according to police.
