Brazilian Tourist Falls on Mount Rinjani, Evacuation Still in Progress

A Brazilian tourist identified by the initials JDSP (27) is currently the subject of an ongoing rescue operation after reportedly falling into a ravine in the Mount Rinjani area, Lombok, West Nusa Tenggara (NTB), on Saturday, 21 June 2025.

The incident occurred in the Cemara Nunggal area, located along the climbing route to the mountain’s summit.

According to East Lombok Police Public Relations Officer Iptu Nicolas Oesman, the victim was still alive when last spotted. “The victim is still safe (alive),” he stated, as quoted by Antara, Saturday. “Her cries for help could still be heard from the base of the cliff.”

The Brazilian tourist had been trekking to the Sembalun Pelawangan Post with six other companions and was accompanied by a local guide.

The group departed from the Gunung Rinjani National Park (TNGR) office on Friday, 20 June. On Saturday morning, she continued the ascent with the guide while the others followed.

“On her way to the Cemara Nunggal on Mount Rinjani, the victim experienced fatigue and the guide advised the victim to take a break,” said Oesman.

The guide proceeded with five of the victim’s companions to the summit. When she failed to reappear, the guide returned to the last resting point but found she was no longer there.

During the search, the guide noticed a light beneath a cliff near the direction of Segara Anak Lake. “The guide confirmed that it was the victim. After that, the guide contacted TO and the authorities to take action,” Oesman added.

The ravine is estimated to be between 150 to 200 metres deep. The victim was reportedly still conscious at the time, and her flashlight and voice were used to help locate her. However, due to poor network access, the full extent of her injuries and condition remains unknown.

“The depth is estimated to reach 150─200 metres,” stated the official Instagram account of Gunung Rinjani National Park. “Luckily, the victim was safe, although she seemed to be in severe shock. Her cry for help was the starting point for quick coordination between parties.”

A 11-person rescue team, involving TNGR officers, police, and military personnel, has been dispatched to reach the victim. “The team is expected to arrive at Sembalun Health Centre in the early hours of Sunday, 22 June 2025, through the Bawak Nao hiking trail in Sajang Village, Sembalun,” Oesman said.

At the time of reporting, the evacuation process remained ongoing. All rescue teams were prioritising safety, given the steep terrain and unpredictable weather conditions that continue to complicate the operation.

Previous Case with Malaysian Tourist

This case follows a fatal incident last month involving a Malaysian tourist on Mount Rinjani. On 3 May 2025, RAG (57) was reported missing after becoming separated from his group while stopping at the Banyu Urip spring. Unlike the current case, he had continued walking while his group paused to collect water.

“With deep sorrow, we inform you that RAG (57), a Malaysian tourist who was reported to have fallen on the Banyu Urip route, has been found dead,” read the caption from the official Rinjani National Park Instagram account on 4 May 2025.

His body was discovered at a depth of 80 metres the following day and was evacuated by 10:30 WITA. Authorities transferred the remains to Bhayangkara Mataram Hospital for further arrangements.
