Rare Angon Kite Festival Brings Thousands of Traditional and International Kites to Bali’s Skies

Thousands of kites filled the skies above Mertasari Beach in Sanur during the Rare Angon Kite Festival 2026, bringing together traditional Balinese kite enthusiasts and international participants from 23 countries in one of Bali’s largest annual cultural celebrations.

Held from 23 to 26 July 2026, the four-day festival featured more than 1,000 traditional Balinese kites alongside 105 international entries representing countries including Australia, Austria, Germany, India, Thailand, and the Philippines.

The opening day saw kite flying activities take place from 10.00 am to 5.00 pm WITA, with giant kites measuring up to 25 metres in length and approximately 20 metres in width becoming one of the festival’s main attractions.

On the second day, daytime flying continued before the programme shifted to a night-flying session beginning at 7.00 pm WITA. During the evening event, illuminated kites fitted with LED lights were flown against the night sky while visitors enjoyed live musical performances.

Traditional Balinese kite competitions took centre stage on the third and fourth days, while international participants continued their flying sessions at Muntig Siokan, another coastal location in Sanur.

The annual festival is recognised as both a sporting and cultural event, reflecting Bali’s long-standing kite-flying traditions while providing a platform for international cultural exchange.

Traditional Balinese Kites Highlight Cultural Heritage

Although international designs attracted significant attention, traditional Balinese kites remained the focus of the festival.

Three classic kite designs dominated the local competition: bebean, shaped like a fish; pecukan, recognised by its elongated oval form; and janggan, the largest and most symbolic of the three.

The janggan kite is designed to represent Basuki, the mythical cosmic dragon in Balinese Hindu belief. Its distinctive tail, which can extend beyond 100 metres, is traditionally decorated in black, red, and white.

Unlike recreational kites, the janggan is regarded as sacred within Balinese culture. Before its first flight, it commonly undergoes a religious blessing ceremony, reflecting its spiritual significance in local traditions.

International participants also introduced a wide range of creative designs inspired by nature, mythology, and popular culture. Among the displays were kites shaped like strawberries, frogs, puppets, and the Hindu deity Ganesha, adding visual diversity to the event while complementing Bali’s traditional kite heritage.

Rare Angon Festival Reflects Bali’s Spiritual Traditions

The festival takes its name from Sang Hyang Rare Angon, one of the manifestations of Lord Shiva in Balinese Hindu belief.

Rare Angon is traditionally depicted as a young shepherd who summons the wind by playing a magical flute, enabling kites to soar through the sky. This symbolism has made the deity closely associated with Bali’s centuries-old kite-flying tradition.

Historically, kite flying has also formed part of Bali’s agricultural culture. Farmers believed that flying kites during the harvest season helped protect crops by driving away birds and pests from rice fields.

The deity Rare Angon is also honoured during Tumpek Kandang, a sacred day in the Balinese calendar dedicated to livestock and animals, further reinforcing the connection between the festival, agriculture, and local religious customs.

Today, the Rare Angon Kite Festival continues to preserve these traditions while welcoming participants and visitors from around the world. By combining cultural heritage, artistic craftsmanship, and international participation, the event has become one of Bali’s most prominent annual festivals, celebrating both the island’s identity and its enduring kite-flying legacy.
