The death toll from the train collision at East Bekasi Station has risen to seven, according to PT Kereta Api Indonesia.

The accident involved a Commuter Line train and the long-distance Argo Bromo Anggrek service.

PT KAI President Director Bobby Rasyidin confirmed the update during a press conference on Tuesday morning, April 28, 2026.

“I am updating the number of victims from last night’s train accident: 7 people died,” he said, as reported by KompasTV Breaking News.

In addition to the fatalities, dozens of passengers were injured. “81 people are being treated for injuries,” Bobby said.

The collision occurred at approximately 8:40 PM WIB on Monday, April 27, 2026. As of Tuesday morning at around 6:30 AM WIB, joint emergency teams were still evacuating victims at the site.

*updated: as reported by various news outlet on Tuesday 11.14 AM, the number of victims: 14 dead, 84 injured

Evacuation Efforts and Cause of the Accident

Bobby said the evacuation process took up to eight hours due to the need for caution.

“This evacuation, frankly, took quite a long time, taking eight hours, and we carried it out very carefully,” he said.

The evacuation involved multiple agencies, including the Indonesian National Police, the National Search and Rescue Agency, the fire department, the Indonesian Red Cross, and medical personnel.

Franoto Wibowo, Public Relations Manager of KAI Operations Area 1 Jakarta, explained the sequence of events leading to the collision. He said the incident began at a railway crossing in the Bulak Kapal area.

“The commuter train stopped because a taxi was hit at the crossing near Bulak Kapal,” said Franoto.

The disruption forced the Commuter Line train to halt on the track. A following Argo Bromo Anggrek train was unable to stop in time.

“The commuter train stopped, and then the Argo Bromo Anggrek train came behind it, which then collided,” he added.

KAI expressed its condolences following the incident.

“So tonight there was a train accident at East Bekasi Station. We, from KAI Operations Area 1 Jakarta, extend our deepest apologies and deepest condolences,” Franoto said during a Kompas TV broadcast.

Service Disruptions and Passenger Impact

The accident has disrupted rail services in the area. PT KAI has cancelled 27 long-distance train journeys to prioritise recovery work.

“For long-distance passengers, from last night until this morning, we have canceled 27 train trips so we can focus on completing the infrastructure and facilities here,” said PT KAI Vice President Anne Purba.

Commuter Line services have also been limited. Due to power disruptions, trains are currently operating only as far as Bekasi Station.

“So, to passengers, we have coordinated with TransJakarta to prepare buses at these stations and also direct them to Bekasi Station, as the KRL service today, at an unspecified time, will only run to Bekasi Station,” Anne said.
