Jakarta to Hold Car-Free Night for Takbiran Celebrations Ahead of Eid al-Fitr

The Jakarta Provincial Government (Pemprov) has announced a Car-Free Night (CFN) to mark Takbiran, the eve of Eid al-Fitr 1447 Hijri. This initiative aims to transform the city centre into a safe, pedestrian-friendly space for residents to celebrate the “night of victory” without the noise and danger of heavy traffic.

  • Vehicle Restrictions: Private cars and motorbikes will be barred from Jakarta’s main arteries, specifically Jalan MH Thamrin and Jalan Jenderal Sudirman. The closure begins at 10:00 PM WIB and will remain in place until the night’s official religious processions conclude.
  • Public Transport Stays Open: To ensure the city remains accessible, TransJakarta buses will continue to operate normally. Officials are urging the public to ditch their private cars and use public transport to reach the festivities to prevent gridlock in surrounding areas.
  • A New Tradition: Jakarta Governor Pramono Anung highlighted that the move is about reclaiming the streets for the people.
“This policy aims to provide a space for the public to enjoy Takbiran celebrations without the interference of motorised vehicles,” Governor Pramono Anung stated via an official government release.

Cultural Highlights: Bedug Festival and Torch Parades

Beyond the traffic restrictions, the heart of the capital will host a series of vibrant cultural events designed to strengthen community bonds and celebrate Indonesian heritage.

  • The Bedug Festival: A central feature of the night, this festival will showcase traditional drumming performances. The Bedug (large drum) is a symbol of the call to prayer and Islamic celebration in Indonesia, and the festival aims to bring a deep cultural nuance to the city’s modern skyscrapers.
  • The Torch Relay: Known locally as Pawai Obor, this traditional parade involves residents and youth groups marching together with hand-held torches while chanting the Takbir. This ancient tradition symbolises the joy and gratitude felt after completing the holy month of Ramadan.
  • Strategic Location: By choosing the Thamrin-Sudirman corridor, the government is utilising Jakarta’s most iconic stage. Typically a hub for business, the area is perfectly suited to accommodate the large crowds expected for this spiritual milestone.

Boosting the Economy and Community Spirit

The Jakarta Provincial Government is not just focusing on tradition; they are also using the holiday period to stimulate the local economy and encourage social interaction.

  • Festive Shopping: Many shopping centres along the Car-Free Night route will offer special Ramadan discounts and promotions. This move is designed to boost public spending and add to the overall festive atmosphere of the “victory night.”
  • Safety and Order: The primary goal of the CFN is to create a more “orderly and comfortable” environment. With vehicles out of the way, families can walk freely, gather, and enjoy the performances without the usual safety concerns associated with Jakarta’s busy traffic.
  • A Shared Celebration: The administration hopes that by providing this dedicated space, residents will respect cultural values while maintaining public order, ensuring that Eid al-Fitr 1447 Hijri begins on a peaceful and joyful note.
