Glitz Production is set to present the hit Broadway show Dreamgirls The Musical at Glitz Inclusive, Kuningan City, from 27 November to 7 December.

The show celebrates the voices and stories of women in the performing arts. SocialExpat is among the lucky ones to attend the premiere on 27 November 2025.

A Modern and Inclusive Adaptation

With a contemporary and inclusive approach, Glitz Production’s Dreamgirls The Musical aims to preserve the spirit of the original. Which are elevating marginalised voices while celebrating the power of female solidarity and friendship within the fierce, competitive world of entertainment.

Set in the 1960s and 70s, Dreamgirls follows a girl group navigating the glamorous yet demanding American music industry. Through gospel, R&B, soft pop, disco, and more.

Three veteran theatre actors, Lydia Napitupulu, Cheryl Mesa Barlianto, and Ariella Hamid, take on the iconic roles of Effie White, Deena Jones, and Lorrell Robinson.

The trio shares their journeys, portraying their efforts to break through in the music industry.

Watching a show at Glitz Inclusive truly felt different from any other theatre experience I’ve had.

The atmosphere was relaxed and social, almost like stepping into a stylish lounge that just happened to host a full-scale musical. Before the performance began, I could enjoy drinks and snacks. Not to mention, the panoramic LED screen surrounding the stage immediately set an immersive tone.

I also loved the unique seating layout. Instead of traditional rows, the shared tables made the space feel warm and no seat was too far away. The furthest was only about 2 metres from the stage. It created a sense of intimacy that made the entire performance feel incredibly close .

As for the performance itself, the cast absolutely gave their all. Songs like “Cadillac Car,” “Steppin’ to the Bad Side,” and the legendary “And I Am Telling You I’m Not Going” (my personal favourite) were delivered with astonishing power.

Every actor demonstrated a remarkable vocal range, and I genuinely felt the energy and emotion in each song. It was an unforgettable experience to watch it all!

Show Summary

Dreamgirls follows the rise of The Dreamettes, a young female vocal group from Chicago: Effie White, Deena Jones, and Lorrell Robinson, who dream of breaking into the music industry of the 1960s.

After a rocky start, they are discovered by ambitious manager Curtis Taylor Jr., who sees commercial potential in them and begins shaping their careers. He encourages them to become backing singers for rising R&B star James “Thunder” Early, paving the way for their success.

As the group’s popularity grows, Curtis begins altering the Dreamettes’ identity.

He replaces Effie, the powerhouse lead vocalist, with the slimmer and attractive Deena, believing her look will appeal to mainstream white pop audiences. Effie resists the changes, sparking explosive conflict within the group.

Eventually, Curtis removes her entirely, rebranding the group as Deena Jones & The Dreams, while Effie faces hardship before eventually rising again.

The final act reveals the emotional consequences of fame, ambition, and personal choices. Deena becomes disillusioned with Curtis’s controlling nature and realises she wants independence and a life beyond the spotlight.

Effie rebuilds her career with help from songwriter C.C. White, her brother, and the group’s creative anchor, leading to a heartfelt reunion.
