New High-Speed Ferry Connects Banyuwangi and Denpasar in Under Three Hours

Share:

A new transportation link between East Java and Bali officially began operating on Wednesday, 23 July 2025, providing a direct fast ferry route from Marina Boom Beach in Banyuwangi to Serangan Island Port in Denpasar.

The route offers a more time-efficient and convenient alternative to existing land and air travel options for tourists and business travellers alike.

The fast ferry service operates daily, except on Tuesdays, for routine maintenance. Departing at 09:00 WIB from Banyuwangi, it is scheduled to arrive at Serangan Port, Denpasar at 11:30 WITA, with the return trip departing Denpasar at 14:00 WITA and arriving back in Banyuwangi at approximately 15:30 WIB.

The journey takes approximately 2.5 to 3 hours.

“This fast ferry takes between 2.5 and 3 hours to reach its destination, arriving directly in the heart of each city. This will significantly save travel time compared to crossing from Ketapang to Gilimanuk,” said Nyono, Head of the Transportation Department of East Java Province, in a statement quoted by Kompas.com on Thursday, 24 July 2025.

Previously, travellers had to rely on a combination of ferry and land transport via Ketapang and Gilimanuk, which could take up to five or six hours.

The new route is designed to enhance regional connectivity while catering to the increasing number of tourists travelling between East Java and Bali.

Travel Time Cut in Half, Fares Start from Rp 225,000

The new ferry service has a total capacity of 400 passengers, with fares set at Rp 225,000 for regular class and Rp 275,000 for VVIP class. Passengers are allowed up to 20 kilograms of luggage. A parking area is also available at Marina Boom Banyuwangi, with a daily fee of Rp 5,000.

On its maiden voyage, the ferry carried 50 passengers with various travel purposes, including tourism, family visits, and business trips. The ticketing system is entirely online, offering ease of access and flexibility for travellers.

“No matter how many people register, the ship will still depart. This is part of our promotion and outreach to the public,” added Nyono. He also confirmed that safety aspects have been thoroughly assessed, including the condition of the vessel, port facilities, and weather considerations.

The Regent of Banyuwangi, Ipuk Fiestiandani, expressed her appreciation for the new transport initiative and acknowledged the support from various stakeholders.

“Alhamdulillah, the Banyuwangi–Denpasar fast boat is now officially operational. This adds a new transportation option for both residents and tourists,” she said, as reported by Kumparan.

Currently, only one ferry operates on the route, but the East Java Transportation Department has stated that it is prepared to introduce one or two additional vessels should passenger demand continue to grow.

The ferry initiative marks a notable improvement in inter-island transport infrastructure and is expected to support regional tourism, economic activities, and community mobility.

Travellers now have a reliable and time-saving alternative to bridge the distance between East Java and Bali.
