An electronic passport is a type of standard passport used for international travel. These are issued in printed form but include several features that distinguish them from non-electronic (regular) passports.

Electronic passports contain distinct markings and are equipped with a chip that stores the owner’s biometric data, providing added security.

The Class II TPI Tanjungpandan Immigration Office will begin issuing electronic passports (e-passports) in full for all standard passport applications starting 1 May 2025. This policy follows the Decree of the Director General of Immigration Number IMI-263.GR.01.02 of 2024 concerning the Full Implementation of Electronic Passport Issuance Across Indonesia.

The head of the Tanjungpandan Immigration Office, Heryansyah Daulay, confirmed that all staff members are prepared to implement the policy.

“We have made all preparations. We are ready to welcome this new era so that the transition to electronic passports runs smoothly,” he said, as reported by RRI.

He further explained the benefits of e-passports:

“It is safer from forgery and facilitates the immigration verification process in various countries. In fact, some countries such as Japan provide visa-free facilities for Indonesian e-passport holders,” he said.

The Directorate General of Immigration, under the Ministry of Immigration and Corrections, initially began rolling out electronic passports comprehensively and gradually starting 1 December 2024. This initial phase was implemented across 13 designated immigration offices in Indonesia.

Acting Director General of Immigration, Saffar M. Godam, stated that his department would implement full electronic passport issuance in stages, beginning with these 13 immigration offices from 1 December 2024:
