A viral video uploaded by @ken_abroad seems to justify the friendly image.

The video shows Ken, a foreigner, receiving friendly treatment from local Indonesians.
In the caption of his post, Ken wrote that he was in Batam and bought a drink on the side of the road. Because the woman selling the drinks could not speak English, he asked a young man passing by to translate.
As Ken continued his journey on foot from the drink stall, the young man approached him on his motorbike and asked where he was going.
To Ken’s surprise, the young man not only offered to take him to his destination but also refused to accept any money for the ride.
“What a great hospitality here in Batam, Indonesia,” Ken wrote in his post.
The post also received many comments. Some said that the young man, Agung, who was driving the foreigner, represented the proper attitude of Indonesians.
“From personal experience I think Indonesia maybe the friendliest country I’ve been to,” wrote another netizen.
For those curious about the source of Indonesia’s reputation as a friendly nation, it is largely attributed to the rich traditions and culture deeply ingrained in Indonesian society.
The friendly nature of Indonesians manifests the cultural values that exist in society.
