Government is Considering Giving Dual Citizenship to the Indonesian Diaspora

Share:

The government plans to offer dual citizenship for Indonesian diasporas working in the digital technology sector to work in the country to increase digital talent.

Coordinating Minister for Maritime Affairs and Investment Luhut Binsar Pandjaitan offers dual citizenship to talented Indonesian diasporas.

Luhut conveyed this from the pulpit of the opening speech of the Microsoft Build: AI Day at JCC, Jakarta, Tuesday, April 30, 2024.

“We also invite the diaspora in Indonesia, and then we also give dual citizenship immediately,” said Luhut.

Luhut said 400 young people have been recruited and returned to the country. In addition, in 2029, as many as 3,000 young workers will be ready to work as software developers through Sekolah Unggulan Del.

Thus, Luhut thinks human resources (HR) in Indonesia is fine. He assured Microsoft CEO Satya Nadella that investment in the country would not make him regret it.

What is the Indonesian Diaspora?

The Indonesian Diaspora is the Indonesian community living abroad.

Luhut’s response to the diaspora may be related to the number of Indonesian citizens who have become foreign nationals.

The Ministry of Law and Human Rights (Kemenkumham) noted that 3,912 Indonesian citizens decided to become Singapore citizens during 2019-2022.

It was revealed that Indonesians chose to change citizenship to become Singaporeans to improve their welfare. The reason is that the employment rate in Indonesia is getting low.
