Fatal Accident on Jakarta-Cikampek Toll Road Claims 12 Lives

Karawang, Indonesia – A horrific accident occurred on the contraflow lane of the Jakarta-Cikampek Toll Road at KM 58 on Monday morning, April 8th, 2024. The collision involved three vehicles: a Daihatsu Gran Max, a Daihatsu Terios, and a Primajasa bus. The Gran Max, carrying 12 passengers – 5 men and 7 women, was engulfed in flames, resulting in the tragic death of all occupants.

The Karawang Police, led by Kapolres AKBP Wirdhanto Hadicaksono, confirmed the incident and reported that the identification process for the charred remains of the victims is ongoing. The bodies have been evacuated to the Karawang Regional General Hospital (RSUD).

“Currently, 12 body bags have been evacuated and are in the process of identification,” AKBP Wirdhanto stated, as quoted by Jawa Pos.

The police are urging families of the victims to come to the RSUD Karawang to assist in the identification process.

Cause of the Accident Under Investigation

The exact cause of the accident is still under investigation by the Indonesian National Police (Polri). However, initial reports suggest that the Gran Max, traveling from Jakarta, collided with the Terios and the Primajasa bus. The impact of the collision caused the Gran Max to burst into flames.

Kakorlantas Polri, Irjen Pol Aan Suhanan, explained that the accident occurred at approximately 7:04 a.m. WIB. He confirmed that the Gran Max was completely incinerated, making identification of the victims a challenging task.

Mudik and accident

“The accident resulted in fatalities and two vehicles burning down. Three vehicles were involved in the incident,” Irjen Pol Aan Suhanan stated.

The passengers of the bus sustained serious injuries, while the occupants of the Terios suffered minor injuries. Tragically, all passengers in the Gran Max were confirmed dead.

“All victims in the Gran Max were burned beyond recognition. Therefore, identification by officers is still ongoing. The exact number of victims will be confirmed later,” Irjen Pol Aan Suhanan explained.

The Gran Max, which was completely destroyed by the fire, was registered in East Jakarta.

The Polri is conducting a thorough investigation at the scene of the accident to determine the cause of the incident.

Contra-Flow post accident

PT Jasamarga Transjawa Tol has reimplemented contraflow from KM 47 to KM 70 on the Jakarta-Cikampek Toll Road towards Cikampek. The contraflow was temporarily stopped due to an accident at KM 58 on the Jakarta-Cikampek Toll Road on Monday morning, 8th April, 2024.

The contraflow was reimplemented at 10:36 WIB after the accident scene was cleared. PT Jasamarga Transjawa Tol urges motorists to be careful and drive safely when using the Jakarta-Cikampek Toll Road.
