Ciliwung River Overflow Triggers 2-Meter Floods in Several Jakarta Areas

On Monday, 25th March 2024, the Ciliwung River surged once again, triggering flooding in various parts of Jakarta. Persistent heavy rainfall in recent days elevated the Ciliwung River to alert status 3. Additionally, the breach of the embankment in the Kramat Jati area, East Jakarta, exacerbated the flooding situation. Approximately 30 neighbourhoods experienced flooding, ranging from 30 centimetres to 2 meters in depth.

According to the Jakarta Regional Disaster Management Agency, the most severe flooding occurred in South Jakarta and East Jakarta. The floodwaters inundated hundreds of homes in the Kebon Pala settlement, Kampung Melayu, with water levels reaching one and a half meters by Monday afternoon.

Residents are urging the DKI Jakarta Provincial Government (Pemprov) to expedite the normalization of the Ciliwung River. They also seek swift repairs to the water channel linking the Ciliwung River and the East Flood Canal. The following Jakarta areas experienced flooding as a result of the Ciliwung River overflow:

  • Manggarai, South Jakarta: 50 cm
  • Rawa Jati, South Jakarta: 30 cm
  • Tanjung Barat, South Jakarta: 60-80 cm
  • Pejaten Timur, South Jakarta: 80-130 cm
  • Badara Cina, East Jakarta: 60-80 cm
  • Kampung Melayu, East Jakarta: 110 cm
  • Cawang, East Jakarta: 70-200 cm
  • Cililitan, East Jakarta: 40-60 cm

As reported by Antara News, 562 residents remain displaced in Kalideres due to flooding impacting their homes. The Jakarta government has extended aid to the affected community, providing 235 tarpaulins, 760 blankets, and essential food items.

Additionally, the Ciliwung River area is exhibiting foaming, suspected to result from the disposal of soap waste into the river. Laboratory tests conducted by the Bogor City Environmental Service on Sunday, 24th March 2024, confirm this concern. Such contamination exacerbates the flooding situation in Jakarta and poses health risks to the community.
