A 26-year-old Polish tourist, identified as AB, tragically lost his life on Monday, 22nd January 2024, after accidentally falling into a 9-meter-deep ravine while riding a motorbike in the Nusa Penida area of Bali. The incident occurred as the victim and his companion were traversing Tulad Road in Batu Kandik Village, Nusa Penida, Klungkung.

According to the chronology stated by the Nusa Penida Police, the tragic incident unfolded when the two Polish tourists were en route to a tourist spot using an automatic motorbike. During the journey, the victim was seated as a passenger, while his partner operated the motorbike.

Upon reaching Tulad Road, the two Polish tourists proceeded from the south to the north. The road in the vicinity runs alongside a relatively deep ravine, and they intended to make a U-turn. Unfortunately, during the turn, DP, the driver, lost control of the motorbike, leading to both of them tumbling into the ravine. The victims descended rapidly to the bottom of the ravine.

Nusa Penida Police Chief, Putra Sumerta, remarked, “There are no barriers on the road; it’s also possible that the victim didn’t know how to ride a motorbike, he was uneasy and then fell into free fall at the ravine.”

The victim, AB,  succumbed at the scene, while DP, still conscious upon rescue, was swiftly transported to the hospital. Nusa Penida Police Chief, Police Commissioner Ida Bagus Putra Sumerta, disclosed that both individuals were promptly evacuated to the hospital in Nusa Penida and subsequently transferred to Bali Mandara Hospital in Denpasar.

AB, the Polish tourist who passed away, sustained a severe head injury, while his partner, DP, suffered a right arm fracture and abrasions on the forehead. The Nusa Penida police issued an appeal to all motorbike rental operators in Bali, urging them to rent vehicles to tourists with proficient driving skills or, at the very least, possess a valid driving license.
