Jakarta Tops List for Most Expensive Cost of Living City in Indonesia by National Statistics Agency

In 2022, the National Statistic Agency (BPS) surveyed every city’s cost of living in Indonesia and Jakarta was ranked 1st as the most expensive living city. Apart from Jakarta, nine other cities currently maintain a high cost of living.

“Ten cities boast the highest average consumption value per household,” stated Pudji Ismartini, Deputy for Distribution and Services Statistics at the National Statistic Agency. She highlighted, “DKI Jakarta holds the highest, with a monthly consumption value of IDR 14.88 million,” on Tuesday (12/12/2023).

The National Statistic Agency (BPS) routinely conducts cost of living surveys every few years. BPS disclosed that Jakarta presently holds the highest average public consumption value, reaching IDR 14.88 million per month.

Following closely in second place is Bekasi, with an average monthly cost of living of IDR 14.33 million. To unveil the top 10 cities with the most expensive cost of living, here’s the comprehensive list:

High spending and inflated goods prices contribute significantly to the most expensive cost of living in various Indonesian cities. Additionally, factors like dining out, information technology, communication, financial services, and education continue to wield influence.

Among the five cities presently topping Indonesia’s expensive living list, they’ve encountered an average increase of over 5% compared to 2018. Notably, Makassar and Kendari, located outside Java, have witnessed the most substantial spikes in living costs, surpassing 11%.
