Tabebuia flowers adorned the South Jakarta area on 14 November 2023. A video captured by @lukiiiiluk and reposted by @jktgo showcased the vibrant flowers beautifying Jenderal Sudirman Street in Central Jakarta. This morning’s footage captured the blossoms lining the sidewalks and towering buildings while only a few vehicles passed with so many people exercising.

The Jakarta government initiated planting Tabebuia trees in 2019 along various roads like Cempaka Putih, Kemang, and Gambir, among others, as part of an intensified greening movement embraced by both the provincial and city administrations.

Throughout 2023, the Jakarta Government planted hundreds of trees along its primary thoroughfares. The aim is to further escalate this number in 2024 due to its proven effectiveness in reforestation efforts and enhancement of aesthetic appeal.

Tabebuia flowers, renowned for their vibrant hues, are often likened to Japan’s cherry blossoms. The key disparity lies in their flowering timelines; while cherry blossoms bloom solely in spring annually, tabebuia flowers can bloom year-round, reaching their peak during the dry season.

Tabebuia, a flower hailing from America and Brazil, thrives in the Amazon forest. Its unique trumpet-shaped flowers define this plant species. The Tabebuia family encompasses over 100 species, boasting a wide array of colors—from yellow, white, and magenta to red.

Despite its resilience to hot climates, cultivating tabebuia flowers isn’t a simple task. In Indonesia, these blossoms typically grace us with their presence during March-April and September-November.

The popularity of the tabebuia plant in Indonesia started when the Surabaya city government initiated its use for city greening. Presently, thousands of tabebuia trees embellish Surabaya’s main roads. This greening policy was later adopted by the provincial governments of Jakarta and West Java to enhance their cityscapes.

Beyond aesthetics, tabebuia flowers are strategically planted along roadsides for their air-sterilizing abilities, effectively absorbing carbon and air pollutants. This initiative aims to create a cleaner and fresher atmosphere in these areas.

The blooming of tabebuia flowers received a positive response from Indonesian netizens, particularly in Jakarta. Many likened Jakarta to Tokyo because of these flowers, leading residents to capture and share these moments across social media platforms.
