SMAN 6 Jakarta Burns Down, Killing a Security Guard

Jakarta, Indonesia – 29 September 2023. A high school in South Jakarta, Indonesia, burned down on Friday, September 29, 2023, killing a security guard.

The fire started at around 8:58 a.m. local time, according to a spokesperson for the South Jakarta Fire and Rescue Department. The security guard, identified as CK, 45, heard a loud explosion coming from a power panel and tried to extinguish the fire with a fire extinguisher. However, he was overcome by smoke and passed out. He was taken to hospital, where he was pronounced dead.

A second person, a janitor named IW, 22, was also injured in the fire. He inhaled smoke and was taken to the Pertamina Central Hospital, where he is being treated for shortness of breath.

The cause of the fire is believed to be a short circuit. It caused an estimated Rp 5 million (USD 330) in damage.

Eight firefighters from the South Jakarta Fire and Rescue Department responded to the fire and were able to extinguish it in about 30 minutes. The department is still investigating the cause of the fire. In a footage circulating on the internet, students from the school were seen scattering to the field to evacuate themselves.
