Indonesia Government Plans to Build a Glass Elevator at Kelingking Beach Nusa Penida

Sandiaga Uno, Indonesia’s Minister of Tourism and Creative Economy, stated that installing a glass elevator on Bali’s Kelingking Beach Nusa Penida—the first and only one in the world—will be a tourist innovation for the country.

On a cliff that rises 182 metres, a glass observation platform (also known as a glass elevator) that is 64 metres long and seven metres broad is scheduled to be constructed. The cliff faces right towards the well-known Nusa Penida’s Kelingking beach.

According to Uno, the presence of this glass elevator would entice people to visit Bali. However, the issue of safety must be taken into account.

“And, of course, we have to make sure that everything is according to safety standards and the shape or aesthetics don’t interfere with the natural beauty of the area,” Uno said on Monday, 24th July 2023.

Uno stated that local wisdom would be used in the glass elevator design built on the Kelingking Beach cliff in Nusa Penida. The experience will be unique and fascinating for visitors.

“However, it goes without saying that safety is also a top priority. Additionally, there must be a sustainability component,” said Uno.

Tjok Bagus Pemayun, who oversees the tourism industry in Bali, added that his party had worked with the regional administration to plan the building of this glass elevator.

“The laying of the first stone was held on 7th July, and we hope that it will be carried out in accordance with applicable regulations. That is what we hope for,” Uno explained.

Pemayun expects that installing this glass elevator would help residents and promote tourism in the area, particularly around Nusa Penida, by introducing new, alluring tourist sites.
