Governor Hortono Prepares Jakarta to be The Global Business City

Acting Governor of Jakarta, Heru Budi Hartono, remarked that the government is preparing Jakarta to be a global business city once it loses its status as the capital city. On the 17th of May 2023, he declared while opening a talk show on Jakarta’s transformation into a major business centre at the Jakarta International Equestrian Park in Pulo Gadung, East Jakarta.

Heru Budi mentioned the professor of economy at the University of Indonesia who was also there and stated, “We want to discuss with Indonesia academic and business analyst (Rhenald Kasali) who will present his view about the economy and others.”

Heru Budi said that the provincial and national governments are working to make Jakarta an established global business city.

As a result, Heru Budi encouraged all the relevant stakeholders to participate in the project, which included gathering opinions from various parties to serve as the foundation for developing policies.

The Head of the Presidential Secretariat highlighted that despite losing its role as the capital city, Jakarta must continue to exist to maintain its reputation as an important centre for business.

Heru Budi had previously predicted that Jakarta would become a global business city when the capital was moved to East Kalimantan. However, he noted that certain problems, such as extreme poverty, stunting, traffic, and public transportation, need to be resolved.

Indonesia is leaning toward creating something similar to the United States, where Washington, D.C., acts as the capital. Still, on the other hand, New York City is acting as the country’s major economic, financial, and cultural centre. In Indonesia’s case, the government is hoping for Jakarta to stay as Indonesia’s major economic centre.
