Karen’s Diner Opens in Jakarta: What’s Interesting?

Karen’s Diner, an Australian restaurant franchise with “rude” waiter service, is opening a branch in Jakarta. The opening will be in mid-December in partnership with local restaurant Bengkel Burger, delivered directly through their Instagram account at @karensdinerofficial.

Quoting the website, bemorekaren.com, the restaurant service is quite odd. Diners will be treated harshly by the waiter, as the restaurant’s motto is Good Food Terrible Service, meaning good food terrible service.

The news that Karen’s Diner restaurant will open a branch in Jakarta has attracted public attention. A number of netizens via Twitter social media discussed the uniqueness of the restaurant. Some of them are worried about the service of Karen’s Diner because the Indonesian people are considered easily offended.

Karen’s name appeared in 2020. The origin of the nickname Karen’s name is also often debated. Some people refer to jokes or comedian Dane Cook, while other opinions refer to the character of Karen Smith, played by Amanda Seyfried, who asks insolent and annoying questions.

This restaurant first opened in Sydney, Australia in October 2021, when international restrictions due to the Covid-19 pandemic occurred. Initially, the company was based in Sydney, Viral Ventures, owner of the famous World Bar in Sydney (now known as Wonderland Bar). 

This business is growing rapidly and was able to open seven places within 1 year. In fact, in the one year since opening, the business has seen revenue growth of up to 150 percent and has generated more than AUD 5 million in revenue. 

Until now, this restaurant has been operating globally, both in Australia, the United States, the United Kingdom, Canada, and plans to enter the Asian market, one of which is Indonesia.

Most of the menu is American food. One of the featured menu items is burgers. There are also french fries, waffles, milk shakes, and soft drinks.

In addition to fast food such as burgers and fries, Karen’s Diner restaurant also provides a vegetarian menu, made from plant-based or plant-based patties. Karen’s Diner can be said to implement services that can irritate visitors. For example, the waiter cursed or threw the menu book at the visitor’s table.

This restaurant recommends that children under 16 years old must be accompanied by a parent or guardian. Because the language used tends to be harsh, Karen’s Diner advises minors not to come to the restaurant at 6pm on weekdays and 5pm on weekends.
