The Governor of West Java (Jabar) Ridwan Kamil revealed that the death toll from the Cianjur Earthquake increased to 162 people.
The earthquake also caused 362 people with minor to serious injuries, 2,345 houses were seriously damaged, and 13,400 people were displaced.
The Majority of Victims Were Children
“It was recorded at the BPBD call center that 162 died. The majority of those who died were children, we are very concerned,” said Ridwan Kamil at the Cianjur Regent’s Pendopo, Monday night at 09.30 PM, local time.
Emil said that there were many child victims because at the time of the incident many school students were studying at madrasas or Islamic boarding schools.
“88 times the tremors/aftershocks occurred on a scale of 1.5 to 4.8 on the Richter scale. Therefore, the atmosphere is still vulnerable,” said the man who is familiarly called Emil through his Instagram account @ridwankamil.
Emil has not received exact data on how many children were victims of the 5.6 magnitude earthquake.
“Well, tonight we are still classifying the percentage, but reports in the field always mention qualitatively the majority of children,” he said.
Meanwhile, damaged houses on a scale of 60-100 percent amounted to 2,345 units. In addition there are 2-3 isolated road locations. Meanwhile, national roads are reported to have returned to normal.
The Electricity Was Only 20 Percent On
However, his party has not received further reports regarding the five trapped cars. It was also reported that two power substations were out and only one was functioning.
He also revealed that the electricity was only 20 percent on. He estimates it will take three days to return to normal. Cellular signals also have a lot of problems.
“All state apparatuses have moved. In a matter of hours building an Emergency Hospital, clearing landslides that block roads, preparing refugee tents and public kitchens,” he explained.
“Heavy equipment has been prepared for tomorrow evacuating villages that are still buried by landslides,” he said.
