The Increase of Foreign Tourists in Indonesia Up by 2,000%

4th October 2022 – Indonesia’s Central Statistics Agency (BPS) found that about 1.73 million foreign tourists visited Indonesia between January and August this year. This figure reflects an increase of 2,028% compared to the same period in 2021.

“This is understandable as last year we were still in a pandemic, which was why we only had 81,292 foreign visits in the same period last year,” BPS chief Margo Yuwono said in Jakarta on Monday, October 3rd 2022.

In August 2022, 510,250 foreign tourists visited Indonesia. Compared to the previous month, this means it is only a modest increase of 6.98%. However, the year-over-year growth rate is a staggering 28,727%.

In August 2022, 510,250 foreign tourists visited Indonesia. Compared to the previous month, this means it is only a modest increase of 6.98%. But the year-over-year growth rate is a staggering 28,727%. Despite the big increase, Margo said the numbers are still well below pre-pandemic visits. “From January to August 2019, there were 8.56 million visits of international travellers,” Margo added. He hopes that foreign tourist visits to Indonesia will soon recover to pre-pandemic levels and help restore the sector’s double impact on the domestic economy.

In addition, BPS recorded that Australia, Singapore and Malaysia were the top three countries of origin for foreign tourists visiting Indonesia in the first eight months of 2022, with 16.6%, 12.4% and 3.9% respectively.

Since the quarantine mandatory no longer exists and the Immigration Department has sped up the visa processing time, a flock of foreign tourists is already expected by the government. Additionally, these are the three main points that future travellers need to be aware of before entering Indonesia:

  • Unvaccinated travellers due to health conditions must present a letter from a Government Hospital.

  • Domestic travellers must fill out an electronic health awareness card (e-HAC) in the Peduli Lindungi app prior to departure.

  • Travellers age 0f 18+ who bring proof of 2 doses and a booster dose of vaccination are no longer required to present antigen or PCR test results.
